PART TIME CLASSROOM ASSISTANT / WORK STUDY / INTERN

JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: TEACHER

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum educational requirements subject to change based on licensing requirements)

High School Diploma or Equivalency and relevant experience working with children

Associate’s Degree or CDA preferred

SUMMARY

Classroom Assistants are expected to support and exhibit a commitment to the Center’s mission and belief statements. In addition, Classroom Assistants are expected to encourage children’s creativity and curiosity. Classroom Assistants may be assigned to specific classrooms or may be designated to move between rooms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES

Enrollment and work needs change day to day and from semester to semester. In order to maintain OCFS New York State licensing ratios and be cost efficient, staff may be reassigned to different classrooms or age groups as needed and may be required to work varying hours.

In addition, ALL employees must be able to:

  • Observe, hear, see, anticipate and respond to children’s needs, conflicts and emergencies that may occur in a classroom, on the playground, in the gymnasium, in the bathrooms, in the hallways and on field trips
  • Determine social, physical, cognitive and emotional needs of children and communicate these in writing and verbally in a professional manner that families and other staff are able to understand and respond to
  • Address/Intervene immediately any and all situations that are potentially hurtful or harmful to a child and/or employee regardless of your job title
  • Handle the stress, tension and exasperation that can occur from dealing with many young children and their families in order to provide an even-tempered customer service
  • Lift up to 30 lbs. without any lifting restrictions
  • Safely carry Infants and older children as needed
  • Get on the floor with children to play and be able to get up and down repeatedly in order to attend to the needs of the children
  • Perform all work in accordance with Bugbee Children’s Center’s Policies/Procedures, NYS OCFS Day Care licensing regulations, governmental laws and state mandates

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide competent supervision including awareness of and responsibility for the ongoing activity of each child in your care. All children must be in the range of vision and be near enough to respond with redirection or intervention strategies when needed.

Assist children in their personal care needs, e.g. diapering, toileting, feeding, washing, clothing, comforting, preparing for rest

Maintain a safe, healthy, nurturing and orderly environment conducive to optimal growth and development of children

Follow the cleaning guidelines/schedule for the classroom including maintaining a clean diaper and bathroom area

Establish a trusting relationship with the children in order to foster their developing autonomy, cooperation, and self-regulation

Actively assistant the Teacher/Teacher Assistant in engaging children in inquiry and play based learning, problem solving and conflict resolution, hands-on activities and outdoor play

Know, understand and implement all Bugbee Children’s Center Personnel and Program policies/procedures and OCFS Regulations, including but not limited to those pertinent to the daily activities of the classroom and interactions with children

FAMILY INTERACTION

Establish and nurture a relationship between home and the Bugbee Children’s Center, which is responsive, respectful and reciprocal, and which clearly acknowledges that parents/guardians are child’s first teacher and the most important influence in their child’s life.

Greeting parents/guardians and child at drop-off and pick-up times

Relay pertinent information to families as directed by Teacher/Teacher Assistant

PROFESSIONALISM

Work cooperatively with Supervisor, other teachers, floaters, teacher assistants, support staff, student participants and volunteers as a member of a team working together for the well being of the children and the center

Continue professional development through required trainings and in-service sessions and engage in other professional development activities such as: attending and presenting at conferences, offering professional development sessions, enrolling in course work and reading professional journals

Respond to unanticipated necessary temporary shift and duty changes in a professional manner understanding that flexibility is often required to meet the needs of children

Perform other duties as required by Supervisor

Model and maintain confidentiality in and outside of the Center setting in regard to children, parents, staff, student participants and volunteersFollow Center policies regarding confidentiality, including social networking
