Department of Health and Community Wellness, Division of Medical Care Services, Mary Eliza Mahoney Health Center in Newark, New Jersey is currently seeking a Certified Medical Assistant responsible for assisting providers with patient visits, medical assistance, rooming patients, vitals, performing screenings, tracking, and providing physician and provider support.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be City of Newark residents.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The position reports to the Head Clinic Nurse and it is responsible for delivering pre and post examination services

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains an effective process of care when confronted with delivering values and beliefs: shows respect. Linguistically appropriate. Adjusts care in accordance with patient‘s cultural, spiritual preferences. Follows age specific standards and utilizes age specific equipment
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of abuse and neglect standards
- Adheres to the organization’s patient safety goals and guidelines (Universal Protocol, Hand Washing, Do Not Use Abbreviations, etc). Utilizes effective modes of communication
- Demonstrates the ability to problem solve. Supports cost containment through efficient use of equipment, supplies and pertinent resources.
- Performs administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the Nurse or Provider
- Intake, including Walk-Ins
- Schedules appointments
- Patient notification and recall
- Assists with billing/coding for payers- i.e.- urinalysis- enters CPT code as required
- Understands the role in Chronic Care Model utilizing a team approach. Works closely with the provider to ensure appropriate care
- Performs interventions/procedures in accordance with applicable policy and procedures, safety guidelines and infection prevention guidelines. Interventions include but are not limited to:
- Interviews the patient to obtain medical information
- Obtains vital signs, visual acuity, height, weight, BMI, wave testing, including quality controls and records.
- Records medical, social, surgical history
- Verifies medications, diets and any additional information needed for the visit
- Requests information from Emergency Room visits or any prior results from
- Prepares the patient for the provider’s examination and assists the provider during the examination as needed
- If appropriately certified and if within the center’s policy, administers medications in accordance with company guidelines
- Responds within the scope of practice to patient care emergencies
- Prepares treatment room for patient care: neat, clean, stocked, and monitors outdated material
- Maintains a patient friendly, safe, clean, clutter free and appropriately stocked
- Attends to missed appointments, recall patients, abnormal results, transfers, referrals, appointments
- Any additional responsibilities as assigned by immediate supervisor
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS MAY INCLUDE:
- Work at different sites for coverage as needed
- If indicated, shows proficiency in processing and sterilization of reusable medical instruments
- Safely operates medical equipment in work areas
- Assists with and supports performance improvement endeavors

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- 2 years community healthcare experience

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:
Pursuant to Section 2:14-1 of the Newark Administrative Code, all persons newly hired must be or become a bona fide resident of the City of Newark. Bone fide resident means having a permanent domicile within the City and one which has not been adopted with the intention of again taking up or claiming a previous residence acquired outside the City limits.
