Job Summary
The Monroe County Health Department is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Medical Assistant to support the Health Services Division. This position will play a vital role in providing excellent patient service and ensure efficient clinical operations through patient registration, intake, billing, medical records management, and clinic coordination.
The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and organizational skills, medical office billing experience, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced public health environment serving diverse populations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Services & Front Desk Support
- Greets patients and visitors in person and by telephone, responding to inquiries and scheduling appointments
- Prepares patient medical charts and intake packets
- Maintains accurate patient records, including demographics, insurance, and screening information
- Verify immunization records through the Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP) as applicable and provides records to patients upon request
Medical Billing & Insurance Coordination
- Prepare and submit insurance and Medicaid claims for services rendered including partner claims rejected by VaxCare
- Ensure accurate patient insurance information is entered in VaxCare
- Follow up on denied or unpaid claims
- Communicate with insurance providers and VaxCare regarding billing issues and documentation needs
Clinical & Administrative Support
- Assist with medical records requests, filing, data entry, correspondence, faxing, copying, and mail distribution
- Maintain accurate patient records and reports, including daily service metrics and performance indicators
- Reconcile daily collections, payments, insurance submissions, and related reports
- Support clinic opening and closing procedures, including assisting with preparing patient rooms and supplies
- Clean and sanitize exam rooms, waiting areas, and equipment in accordance with OSHA standards
- Stock clinic rooms, outreach sites, and mobile unit with supplies and forms
- Assist with inventory management for medications, vaccines, and clinic supplies
- Provide referrals to health insurance consumer assistance programs and other agencies as needed
Qualifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification
Medical office experience preferred and experience working with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook)
Experience with medical coding, insurance billing, Medicaid claims, and claim denial management
Familiarity with state immunization registries and healthcare billing systems preferred
Experience using general office equipment (fax machine, copier, and scanner) is required
Pay: $40,787.00 per year
