Job Summary and Qualifications

Clinical Coordinator Nutrition

The Clinical Nutrition Coordinator position oversees the clinical dietitians ensuring that regulations, policies, and procedures for clinical nutrition are followed.


Minimum Position Requirements:

1. Licensure/Certification/Registration:

a. Registered Dietitian (RD) with Commission on Dietetic Registration

b. Must obtain state licensure within 3 months of hire

2. Education:

a. Bachelors Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics

b. Masters Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics preferred

c. Advanced Certification (CNSC, CSP, CDE, etc) preferred

3. Experience

a. Minimum of two years clinical nutrition experience preferred

4. Special Qualifications

a. Ability to listen, interact, and communicate verbally and in writing

b. Knowledgeable in electronic medical records, Word, and Excel preferred.

c. Experience with scheduling preferred


Degree of Supervision Required: Involves general guidance, supervision, and direction by the Director of FNS.


Patient Population Served: Employees in this position must be able to respond to the nutritional needs of the patients and the community through all age categories from neonate to geriatric populations. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, and/or experience.


Working Conditions: Clinical areas, kitchen, and office settings. Sometimes community health fairs. See attached physical demands analysis for information related to potential job hazards, and functional requirements.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs Clinical Dietitians and provides individual and group Medical Nutrition Therapy as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring all required documentation is completed in a timely and accurate manner, including but not limited to chart audits and AIDET audits.
  • Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities and seeks opportunities to improve department and inter-departmental processes.
  • Serves as a resource to department staff, students, and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care.
  • Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of staff and patients.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards, including CMS and TJC.
  • Frequently communicates with physicians exchanging information and making recommendations on patient care, i.e. Enteral/Parenteral feedings, malnutrition status, diet recommendations, etc.
  • Coordinates division medical nutrition therapy initiatives with dietitians and appropriate hospital staff.
  • Schedules dietitians ensuring adequate coverage for daily patient census managing productivity within the guidelines of the labor budget set by Director of FNS.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplinary process of Clinical Dietitians.
  • Trains the new dietitians according to the department training program and required competencies and continually keeps the Director informed of their progress.
  • Precepts dietetic interns during clinical nutrition rotations.
  • Organizes the office, orders supplies, and ensures dietitians have the tools they need to do their job.
  • Communicates daily with the Director and Patient Services Supervisor regarding patient care, dietitians, diet office, and anything related to the Food & Nutrition Department.
  • Communicates frequently with dietitians, fostering a strong relationship with the PRN staff, is available to discuss issues, and is available after hours if an RD needs to ask a question.
  • Orders and maintains adequate inventory of oral supplements, tube feeding, and modulars.
  • Works with the Patient Services Supervisor and the Director in developing and implementing a training program for the diet office staff.
  • Organizes and implements the monthly PI audits, trends results, and reviews with FNS Director.
  • Contributes to the hospital Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation process. Develops, teaches, and trends outcomes for Bariatric Bootcamp virtual classes.
  • Attends inter-disciplinary clinical committee meetings as required by the hospital and requested by the Director of FNS.
  • Works with the Patient Services Supervisor and the Director in developing and implementing a training program for the diet office staff.

  • Participates in the planning and implementation of wellness programs and other nutrition education projects aimed at the staff and community as directed by the FNS Director.
