The Clinical Informatics Specialist serves as the primary bridge between clinical operations and information systems in a rural acute and ambulatory care setting. This role focuses on optimizing EMR and ancillary clinical systems (e.g., EMR, WebPT, Express Labs, IRIS, PACS, interface engines, patient registries) through end-user support, training, workflow improvement, and system implementation/maintenance to support evidence-based care, regulatory compliance, and organizational goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Onboards staff and providers into the EMR by creating usernames and assigning roles and departments. Adds specific clinical staff to the provider table and interface mapping. Enrolls physician’s and APP’s with Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substance (EPCS), adds provider signatures, and various phones apps such as athenaOne, athenaCapture and VIP for EPCS.

Acts as subject matter expert for clinical information systems; provides at-the-elbow support, troubleshooting, and issue resolution for physicians, nurses, and staff, including EMR-specific technical issues such as data integration errors, workflow status changes, and charting discrepancies.

Designs, delivers, and maintains training programs/materials for new hires, ongoing competency, and system upgrades/changes; serves as primary trainer/educator during implementations.

Analyzes workflows, identifies opportunities for improvement, changes roles/permissions, and implements EHR optimizations that enhance daily clinical operations, revenue cycle processes, and quality outcomes.

Participates in evaluation, selection, implementation, interface development, and upgrade of clinical applications; manages process flow changes and ensures successful adoption.

Collaborates closely with ITS Director with broader technical issues like Interface Message Queue manager (IMQM), Quality Director with quality measures and reporting, Clinical Directors and Staff with EMR workflow, and Administration, on systems projects, reporting needs, regulatory compliance (CMS, MIPS, etc.), and initiative rollouts.

Monitors system performance; works with various inboxes (buckets) to quickly resolve issues without the need of external support for efficiency, identifies and reports anomalies, inefficiencies, or errors; submits vendor tickets and helps coordinates resolution with external support when necessary.

Ensures systems maintain patient privacy/confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and potential accreditation standards; advises on regulatory impacts.

Stays current on clinical informatics trends, technologies, and regulatory changes; makes informed recommendations for new systems or enhancements that align with organizational needs and budget.

Provides patient portal support, limited to errors with portal itself or pushing results to portal (not supporting patient end devices) and supports basic revenue cycle/data management needs.

Monitors PRACTICE inboxes and the Interface Message Queue Manager (IMQM).

Collects end-user feedback, follows up on concerns, and uses aggregate data to drive system improvements that enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and staff engagement.

Other minor duties related to the EMR systems can include, but are not limited to password resets, MFA setup, software integrations, 3rd party EMR applications, etc.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

Registered Nurse (preferred) or other clinical background (e.g., LPN, allied health professional) with prior informatics experience considered.

3–5 years of direct patient care/clinical experience required.

Experience with multiple EMR’s strongly preferred; previous informatics/analyst role ideal. Experience with Athena Health also a positive.
