Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) — Job Description
Summary
- Advanced practice registered nurse who provides expert clinical consultation, leadership in practice change, education, and systems-level improvements to optimize patient outcomes across a specialty area.
Core responsibilities
- Clinical expertise: Provide advanced assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and evidence-based interventions for patients within the CNS specialty (e.g., cardiology, oncology, critical care, pediatrics, mental health).
- Consultation: Serve as a clinical consultant to nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams on complex patient cases and best-practice care.
- Clinical practice improvement: Lead quality improvement projects, implement evidence-based protocols, and measure outcomes to reduce variation and improve safety, efficiency, and patient experience.
- Education and mentoring: Provide direct education and clinical coaching to staff, students, and families; develop curricula, guidelines, and competency assessments.
- Leadership and policy: Participate in policy development, clinical pathway design, and committees; influence organizational decision-making to align practice with current evidence and regulation.
- Research and evidence translation: Critically appraise literature, lead or collaborate on clinical research, and translate findings into practice recommendations and guidelines.
- Systems-level change: Analyze care processes, identify system failures or barriers, and design interventions that improve care delivery and resource utilization.
- Patient/family advocacy: Advocate for patient-centered care, coordinate referrals, and help navigate complex care transitions.
- Documentation and compliance: Maintain thorough clinical documentation, ensure adherence to regulatory standards, and support accreditation and audit activities.
Typical duties (day-to-day)
- Perform comprehensive assessments and develop advanced care plans for complex patients.
- Provide bedside consultation and case review for challenging clinical situations.
- Facilitate interdisciplinary rounds and communicate recommendations to the care team.
- Lead or participate in quality improvement meetings; track and report outcome metrics.
- Deliver classroom and bedside education; create training materials and competency checklists.
- Review and update clinical policies, order sets, and protocols.
- Mentor staff and support professional development activities.
- Assist with data collection for research, present findings, and implement practice changes.
- Coordinate transitions of care and referrals to community resources.
- Maintain certification, licensure, and continuing education requirements.
Required qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or relevant clinical field; DNP preferred for some roles.
- Licensure: Active RN license in the state/jurisdiction of practice; APRN/CNS credentialing per state requirements.
- Certification: National CNS certification in the specialty area (where applicable) or relevant advanced practice certification.
- Experience: 3+ years of clinical nursing experience in the specialty area; prior advanced practice or clinical leadership experience preferred.
- Skills: Advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning, quality improvement methodology, data analysis basics, education and presentation skills, strong communication and leadership.
- Technical: Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), clinical decision support tools, and standard office software.
