PROGRAM PURPOSE

POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the clinical team at the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UICSL), responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in a collaborative, team-based outpatient environment.
The Clinical RN provides hands-on nursing care and clinical coordination to support daily operations. Working closely with the Medical Director, providers, and support staff, the Clinical RN performs patient assessments, administers medications and immunizations, coordinates care, and promotes health education for individuals and families. This role also supports Medical Assistants and clinical staff, fostering teamwork, communication, and cultural understanding across all care services. The Clinical RN ensures patient care is safe, efficient, and culturally responsive, aligned with UICSL policies.
By combining clinical skill with compassionate practice, the Clinical RN strengthens the connection between patients and the care team, ensuring every encounter reflects UICSL’s commitment to culturally grounded, holistic wellness for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides direct patient care, including nursing assessments, medication administration, immunizations, wound care, and health education, consistent with the professional scope and competency of a Registered Nurse.
Performs comprehensive nursing assessments, interpreting data to identify actual and potential health problems, and collaborates with providers to develop individualized care plans.
Coordinates care to ensure continuity across medical, behavioral health, public health, and family & community health programs within the clinic’s integrated care model.
Works collaboratively with Medical Assistants and clinical staff to promote teamwork, respectful communication, and safe patient care workflows.
Maintains adherence to infection control, medication handling, and electronic documentation practices that uphold patient safety and data accuracy.
Participates in preventive health efforts such as screenings, immunization clinics, patient follow-up, and chronic disease management activities.
Advocates for patients and families by ensuring that their rights, values, and cultural traditions are honored and integrated into care.
Provides education to patients and families on wellness, prevention, treatment plans, and medication use in clear, culturally appropriate language.
Accurately documents all assessments, interventions, and communications in the electronic health record, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with clinic policies.
Responds promptly to medical emergencies, provides initial nursing interventions, and supports the healthcare team during stabilization and follow-up.
Collaborates with staff across departments to support coordinated, whole-person care and timely service delivery.
Contributes to ongoing quality improvement efforts through participation in meetings, data collection, and review of patient care outcomes, in coordination with the Quality & Compliance Department.
Assists with maintaining inventory of medical supplies, vaccines, and medications, ensuring proper storage, ordering, and tracking in coordination with the Purchasing Department.
Participates in infection prevention activities, clinic safety initiatives, and staff training related to clinical and operational improvement. Engages in continuing education and professional development to maintain clinical competency and support evidence-based nursing practice.
Exercises sound clinical judgment and consults with providers or supervisors when patient needs extend beyond the Clinical RN scope of practice.
Models professional, ethical, and culturally respectful behavior consistent with the mission and values of the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: a) associate degree in nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program.
Experience: a) Two (2) to three (3) years of direct patient care nursing experience in an outpatient or ambulatory care setting.
Certifications/Licensure: a) Active and unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Utah.
b) Current CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment).
Other: a) Must pass a mandatory criminal background check.
b) Active Driver’s License and insurability through UICSL
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: a) bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
Experience: a) Over three (3) years of direct care nursing experience, preferably in a community health, primary care, or integrated care environment.
Certification/Licensure: a) Advanced certification such as ACLS, PALS, or other recognized clinical certifications relevant to outpatient nursing.
b) Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Other a) Experience working with American Indian and Alaska Native populations or within a Native community health setting.
KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND CHARACTERISTICS (KCC)
Knowledge of nursing principles, clinical procedures, and patient-centered care practices within an outpatient or community health setting.
Knowledge of culturally responsive and trauma-informed care that honors the values, traditions, and healing practices of American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
Knowledge of infection control, immunization, medication safety, and documentation practices.
Knowledge of preventive health, chronic disease management, and health promotion strategies that support patient wellness.
Knowledge of quality assurance, safety practices, and performance improvement processes that strengthen patient outcomes and clinical effectiveness.
Skills in conducting patient assessments, implementing nursing interventions, and coordinating care within a multidisciplinary team.
Skills in communication, problem-solving, and collaboration that foster teamwork, mutual respect, and patient trust.
Skills in using electronic health records (EHRs), maintaining accurate electronic clinical documentation, and supporting data-driven improvement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment includes both clinic and community health settings, involving frequent interaction with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. Duties include providing direct care, participating in health education, vaccination events, and outreach activities that require professionalism and flexibility. While based at the UICSL clinic, the position may include local travel between sites or events, with occasional evening or weekend hours. The work environment is collaborative, culturally grounded, and focused on holistic wellness for American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands include work in clinic and community settings requiring regular movement through patient care areas and offices. The role involves standing, walking, bending, and assisting patients during clinical procedures. Occasional lifting or carrying of supplies and materials up to 25 lbs. may be required. Participation in wellness or outreach events is expected.
