Clinical Trial & Research Billing Specialist (Audit & Compliance)

Health Information Partners® (HIP) is seeking an experienced Clinical Trial & Research Billing Specialist to support healthcare organizations with auditing clinical trial billing, reviewing research billing compliance processes, and evaluating research revenue cycle workflows.

This per diem / project-based role is ideal for a professional with deep experience in clinical trial billing compliance, Medicare Coverage Analysis, and research charge review who enjoys identifying risk areas and helping organizations strengthen their research billing practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct audits of clinical trial billing and research-related claims to ensure compliance with federal regulations and payer requirements.
• Review Medicare Coverage Analyses (MCA), billing grids, and study protocols to validate appropriate billing of routine care vs. research-only services.
• Evaluate research billing workflows and internal controls across research administration, compliance, and revenue cycle functions.
• Identify potential compliance risks related to clinical trial billing, including duplicate billing, sponsor vs. payer responsibility, and documentation gaps.
• Prepare audit reports and findings with clear recommendations for improvement.
• Collaborate with compliance, research administration, and revenue cycle leaders to strengthen research billing processes and controls.
• Remain current on regulatory guidance including Medicare Clinical Trial Policy (NCD 310.1), CMS guidance, and OIG enforcement trends related to research billing.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in clinical trial billing, research billing compliance, or research revenue cycle operations
• Strong knowledge of Medicare Coverage Analysis, billing grids, and clinical trial billing regulations
• Experience performing clinical trial billing audits or compliance reviews
• Familiarity with hospital or academic medical center research programs
• Ability to review clinical trial protocols and determine appropriate billing pathways
• Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills

Preferred Credentials

• CHC (Certified in Healthcare Compliance)
• CPC, CPMA, or other relevant coding/compliance credential

Experience with Epic Research or other clinical trial billing systems
