The function of a Clinical Unit Assistant is to enroll volunteers into clinical trials. Procedures performed include gathering social history, collecting ECG's, vital signs, and obtaining blood and urine samples.
Strong phlebotomy skills required. Full training and ongoing support will be provided. Put your skills to use in an environment that works as a team and grows leaders!
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in collection, processing, storage and tracking of biological samples.
- Ensure timely delivery of all biological samples to the lab to ensure the integrity of the samples is maintained and processing times are met.
- Perform meal preparation and meal monitoring according to study restrictions and NN SOPs.
- Assist in preparing the clinical unit for check-in and next day on study procedure set-up.
- Enforce NN Clinical Unit House Rules with all study participants and visitors
- Report all broken / malfunctioning clinical equipment.
- Review / restock clinical unit consumables / Linen / food stores and advise when stock need ordering.
- Self-assess performance of unit tasks to identify potential error and rectify promptly
- Maintain the general appearance and cleanliness of the clinical unit including patient kitchen.
- When delegated, assist in the Screening department with appointments
- When delegated, assist the Project Management teams with on-study admin preparation / conduct which may include but not limited to:
- blood collection kit preparation
- blood / aliquot tube labelling,
- photocopying,
- clipboard set-up
- data entry into sponsor suppled Case Report Forms (CRFs).
- Maintain competency with Basic Life Support and other emergency procedures such as fire and evacuations
- Ensure own Learning and Development Key Performance Indicators are met and upheld
- Establish good liaison and communication with all members of the team.
- Participate when requested in group meetings aimed at identifying operational problems and developing solutions
- Other duties as delegated by NN management.
Requirements
- Strong phlebotomy skills required.
- Tertiary qualification in related science or health care discipline.
- Team player with excellent time management.
- Ability to adhere to relevant document standards.
- Excellent communication skills with high attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
- EMT, paramedic or RN or qualified candidates w/ heavy phlebotomy and patient care experience.
- Experience with GDP (Good Clinical Practice) - preferred but we can teach you!
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move around the clinical unit for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting of supplies, equipment, and biological samples.
- Ability to lift and carry items up to 30 pounds.
- Manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures such as blood collection and sample handling.
- Ability to assist in meal preparation and monitoring, which may require repetitive hand movements.
- Adequate vision and hearing to monitor patient conditions and respond to emergencies.
- Ability to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
- Capacity to respond quickly to emergency situations, including performing Basic Life Support (BLS) if needed.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment with frequent interruptions.
