CNC Machinist (2nd Shift)

Job Description:

This position is for an outstanding CNC Machinist. The successful candidate will be responsible for basic set up and operation of CNC lathes and/or mills, as well as inspection of machined parts.

This position is currently scheduled for 2nd Shift, Monday through Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., based on current production and business needs. However, this schedule is expected to be temporary in nature. The position will likely transition to a standard 1st Shift schedule of Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. within approximately the next year.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Skills:

  • Ability to hold tolerances of .0002 / .0001.

  • Ability to set up and operate numerical-control machines to machine surfaces of metallic and nonmetallic work pieces according to specifications and tooling instructions by applying knowledge of machining methods.

  • Ability to position, secure, and align holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials into machines.

  • Ability to calculate and adjust machine speed and feeds.

  • Ability to change cutting tools and adjust offsets to ensure specified timing, clearances, and tolerances.

  • Ability to check and edit existing programs (CNC machines at Thomas Instrument use either Fanuc or HAAS controls).

  • Ability to assemble and preset tooling for next operation during automated cycle to reduce machine downtime.

  • Ability to observe machine during operation in order to detect problems.

  • Ability to measure and document dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.

  • Proficient with use of micrometers, calipers, electronic height gages, and dial indicators.

  • Working knowledge of aerospace quality system processes and documentation to capture inspection evidence.


  • Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of CNC machining and production of aerospace tools and parts.

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions.

  • Working knowledge of, and understanding of, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Understanding of, and ability to enter commands into control panel to retrieve pre-programmed machine data from central database location.

  • Working knowledge of, and ability to provide technical expertise and feedback to manager, programmers, and manufacturing engineers.


  • Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience in CNC machining.

  • Experience with adaptive problem-solving approach and implementing solutions.
