CNC Machinist / Welder / Fabricator
Verterra Energy, Inc. | New Brighton, MN | Full-Time, On-Site | $115K+
What We Build
Verterra Energy is a DoD-funded clean energy company building the VOLTURNUS hydrokinetic water-current turbine. Our hardware has been funded through the Department of Defense, with units delivered to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and our latest contract supporting the U.S. Air Force. We turn water into power and we're scaling.
Our New Brighton shop is where the turbines get made. Real hardware, real tolerances, real deadlines.
The Role
We're hiring a senior tradesperson to own machining, welding, and fabrication on our floor. You'll be the person we trust to take a part from print to first article - setting up the CNC, dialing it in, cutting chips, welding the assembly, and walking it out the door ready for the next step.
This is a craftsperson's role. You report directly to the CEO. You work alongside our mechanical and electrical engineers, with real authority over how the work gets done on the floor. Not a desk job. Not a manager role. The work is the work.
The Shop
- Machines: Haas CNC mills and lathes (3-axis, plans for 5-axis), ShopBot 5-axis router, manual mill and lathe, full welding bay, press brake, bandsaw
- Materials: Carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, plastics, composites - we run what the turbine needs
- Processes: CNC milling and turning, MIG and TIG welding, sheet metal forming, structural fabrication, light assembly
- Standards: We run an immaculate floor. Tools live in their place. Machines get wiped down at end of day. Chips don't pile up. If that's not how you work, this isn't your shop.
What You'll Own
- Setting up and running Haas CNC mills and lathes from engineering prints and CAD files
- MIG and TIG welding across carbon steel, stainless, and aluminum to spec
- Fabrication from prints - sheet metal, structural, weldments
- First article inspection and dimensional verification using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and basic GD&T
- Tooling and fixturing decisions for new parts
- Preventive maintenance on machines you operate
- Helping our engineers troubleshoot manufacturability issues before they hit the floor
What You Bring
- 8+ years running CNC machines (Haas experience preferred) and welding professionally
- A portfolio of work you're proud of - parts, weldments, assemblies you can talk through
- Fluent with prints, GD&T, and shop math
- AWS welding certifications a plus (D1.1, D1.2, or equivalent)
- 5-axis CNC experience a strong plus
- Comfortable being the most senior person in the shop on a given day
- Physically capable of standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in a manufacturing environment
Compensation and Benefits
- $115,000 base salary (exceptional candidates can earn more)
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k)
- Unlimited PTO
- A shop where the work gets to be the work
