CNC Setup Machinist

CNC Setup Machinist must demonstrate a blend of traditional mechanical skills and

modern digital proficiency, particularly with advanced 4- or 5-axis machines.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED is the standard minimum. Preference is often

given to candidates with an associate degree in precision machining or a technical

certificate from a trade school.

  • Experience:

o Standard: Minimum of 3–5 years in CNC mill setup and operation.

o Senior/Specialized: 8–10+ years for roles involving complex multi-axis (5-axis)

machining or hardened materials like Inconel.

  • Certifications: NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) Machining Level I, II, or III certifications are highly valued for demonstrating industry-standard competency.

Technical Skills & Requirements

  • Machine Setup: Proficient in installing and adjusting tools, fixtures, and work-holding

devices (vices, collets, attachments).

  • Programming & Controls:

o Ability to read and edit G-code and M-code directly at the control.

o Experience with specific controls such as Fanuc, Haas and Mitsubishi control

o Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Surfcam) for toolpath

optimization.

  • Precision Measurement: Mastery of precision tools like micrometers, calipers, depth

gauges, and indicators. Ability to interpret complex GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) on blueprints.

  • Math Proficiency: Strong foundation in shop math, including geometry and

trigonometry for calculating offsets, speeds, and feeds.

  • Modern Tech (2026 Shift): Growing demand for experience with probing cycles,

automated tool presetting, and basic integration with 3D-printed/additive manufacturing components.

Soft Skills & Physical Demands

  • Problem-Solving: Critical thinking to troubleshoot machine errors, tool wear, and

material inconsistencies.

  • Communication: Ability to collaborate with engineers and quality control to ensure

"First Article" success.

  • Physical: Must be able to stand for 8–12 hour shifts and lift between 25 and 50 lbs

unassisted.

Pay: $24.00 - $40.00 per hour
