The Coding Specialist is responsible for reviewing and coding outpatient medical records using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding standards to ensure accurate reimbursement and compliance with regulatory guidelines. This role works closely with the Health Information Management (HIM) department and other hospital teams to support timely billing, maintain coding accuracy, and assist with medical record operations as needed.
Review and code outpatient medical records including Emergency Department, outpatient surgery, and observation visits using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding standards.
Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with established coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
Enter coded data into the MEDITECH electronic health record system to support billing and reimbursement processes.
Review Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC) Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) payment group reassignments for potential coding errors and educational improvement.
Provide requested copies of Medicaid Emergency Department charts to the Business Office as needed.
Support daily functions of the Health Information Management (HIM) department as workload or operational needs require.
Maintain confidentiality and accuracy when handling patient medical records and sensitive information.
Training or job experience in ICD-10-CM and CPT coding.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in medical documentation.
One year of outpatient medical coding experience.
Experience working in a hospital or healthcare setting.
Familiarity with MEDITECH electronic health record systems.
Compensation is based on experience and qualifications. This is a non-exempt position. Schedule details will be discussed during the interview process.
