Position Description:

The Barista is the foundation of the Coffeehouse. Responsible for providing excellent customer service experience for all. Displaying knowledge and expertise while producing quality beverages, and assisting in the sale of coffee and coffee accessories. A professional Barista always displays a positive attitude and readily fulfills any additional duties assigned. Enjoys being part of a team and believes in the importance of locally owned business.

Customer Service

• Respect customers by providing quick, friendly and personal service.
• Develop rapport with customers by learning their names and favorite products.
• Accurately process transactions through the POS and give correct change to customers.
• Respond appropriately to customer concerns.
• Assist customer with product selection.
• Maintain appropriate levels of personal hygiene and appearance while adhering to company dress code.
• Maintain high level of standards for all product preparation.
• Adhere to all company recipes and measurements.
• Follow health, safety and sanitation guidelines.
• Anticipate customer and store needs by constantly evaluating environment and customer cues and work towards fulfilling them.

Teamwork

• Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
• Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume and unusual events to keep the store operating to standard.
• Assist in the training of new staff by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful, encouraging guidance when needed.
• Complete all required tasks and assigned duties before leaving a scheduled shift.
• Work with coworkers and management to effectively implement change.
• Communicate in a positive and respectful manner.
• Demonstrate honesty, integrity, commitment and understanding.

Initiative

• When no customers need service, actively engage in cleaning, organizing or fulfilling other on-shift responsibilities.
• Continuously review the store environment to identify and complete tasks without being asked to do so.
• Make effort to improve job skills, knowledge and education.
• Take ownership of processes and quality improvements.
• Contribute to a positive and healthy work environment

Supervision

• Retail coffeehouse team members perform daily activities under the general direction of Senior Shift Leaders and/or Shift Lead on duty. Some duties require working directly with another team member(s).

Physical Requirements

• Retail coffeehouse team members should be able to stand and walk for long periods of time and should be physically capable to lift, push and pull up to 40 pounds. Baristas also need to occasionally use ladders, stairs and ramps and they must reach, turn and perform precision work around the bar area.

Schedule & Reliable Transportation

• Baristas are expected to be at their coffeehouse when scheduled as well as to perform other duties to ensure smooth and sustainable operations. Baristas are part of the larger Coffee By Design community and as such, may attend additional trainings and meetings which include store & retail meetings, educational workshops on coffee, leadership and sustainable practices (finance, environmental, diversity and inclusion to name a few).
• In order to be an active participant in these opportunities, we do require staff have reliable transportation (car, metro, bike, carpool) to attend.
• Staff should notify the office in advance if they need assistance to attend.
