College Academic Manager & Tutor

Job Summary
We are looking for a dependable, organized, and proactive Academic Manager to support a sophomore student-athlete at Texas Tech University. This is not a traditional tutoring role. You will function as a full academic support partner, helping the student stay on top of coursework, deadlines, and professor communication while providing weekly progress reports to the family.

This role is primarily in-person. The Academic Manager is expected to meet with the student on the Lubbock campus as much as possible, including attending meetings with professors, academic advisors, and grade counselors alongside the student.

Due to the nature of this role, all candidates must complete a background check and sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) prior to being hired.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with the student in person on the Texas Tech Lubbock campus as frequently as possible to provide hands-on academic support
  • Track all assignments, projects, and exams across the student’s course load and maintain an organized master calendar
  • Review outgoing communications the student drafts to professors and provide feedback before they are sent; the counselor will not send communications on the student’s behalf
  • Review completed assignments and projects and provide constructive feedback prior to submission
  • Ensure all assignments and projects are submitted on time; provide reminders and accountability checkpoints in advance of due dates
  • Attend meetings with professors, academic advisors, and grade counselors alongside the student as needed
  • Provide subject-matter tutoring support across current coursework as needed
  • Deliver a structured weekly report to the parents covering academic standing, upcoming priorities, completed work, and any concerns
  • Identify early warning signs of academic struggles and communicate them to parents promptly
  • Help the student develop time management habits and organizational systems that build long-term academic independence

Schedule & Compensation

This is a flexible, non-traditional schedule. Hours will vary week to week based on the student’s academic and athletic calendar. Availability for morning, evening, and occasional weekend check-ins is expected. The position requires regular in-person availability on the Texas Tech Lubbock campus.

During high-demand periods such as midterms, finals, or weeks with multiple major projects due, hours beyond 20 per week may be required. Flexibility and availability during these stretches is essential to this role.

During summer sessions, hours may be reduced due to a lighter course load. If this is the case, the family will communicate any hour reductions at least two weeks in advance to allow for proper planning.

Parents may request mid-week check-in meetings as needed. When this occurs, every effort will be made to schedule these meetings in advance to accommodate the Academic Manager’s schedule.

  • Minimum: 10 hours per week
  • Maximum: 20 hours per week (may exceed during peak academic periods)
  • Base Compensation: $25 per hour

Performance Bonus

This role includes a performance bonus tied to the student’s academic results at the end of each semester. Bonuses are paid at the conclusion of each semester once final grades are confirmed.

Fall & Spring Semesters:

  • $500 bonus if the student achieves a semester GPA between 3.0 and 3.99
  • $1,000 bonus if the student achieves a 4.0 GPA for the semester

Summer Sessions:

  • $200 bonus if the student achieves a GPA between 3.0 and 3.99
  • $400 bonus if the student achieves a 4.0 GPA

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s degree or higher preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of tutoring, teaching, or academic coaching experience at the collegiate level
  • Ability to meet with the student in person on Texas Tech University’s Lubbock campus on a regular, frequent basis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort communicating with university faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines and stay organized on behalf of others
  • Must pass a background check prior to hire
  • Must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) prior to hire; strict confidentiality is required given the student’s status as a collegiate athlete

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Texas Tech University’s academic systems, portals (Canvas, Raiderlink), and campus resources
  • Prior experience in an academic advisor, student success coach, or case management role
  • Experience supporting collegiate student-athletes, including an understanding of the unique scheduling and eligibility demands they face
  • Ability to tutor across multiple subjects, particularly business, communications, or general education coursework
  • Experience working directly with college-age students in a structured accountability capacity
  • Comfort using productivity and communication tools (Google Workspace, Notion, or similar) to share updates with families
  • A patient, professional demeanor with the ability to advocate for a student in institutional settings

Reporting

The Academic Manager will report directly to the student’s parents. A structured weekly check-in report is required each week and should cover: current grade standing by course, completed work from the prior week, upcoming deadlines and high-priority items, any outstanding professor communications, and a general status summary.
