HVAC Service Technician / Comfort Advisor (Residential Focus)
Nolan Air Heating & Cooling is seeking a driven and customer-focused HVAC Service Technician / Comfort Advisor to join our growing team. This hybrid role combines hands-on service and maintenance responsibilities with in-home sales and system consulting, making it ideal for a technician who enjoys both technical work and customer engagement.
In this position, your time will be intentionally split between running service and maintenance calls and handling sales opportunities and estimates generated through service visits, maintenance agreements, and inbound leads. The role is primarily residential, with occasional light commercial systems not exceeding 5 tons.
Successful candidates are not only strong technicians, but also confident communicators who can evaluate customer needs, present repair vs. replacement options, and guide homeowners toward solutions that improve comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency. With a strong commission structure on replacements and IAQ solutions, this role offers significant upside potential and total compensation exceeding $100,000 per year.
Key Responsibilities
Service, Diagnostics & Maintenance
- Diagnose, service, and repair residential HVAC systems, including split-system air conditioners and heat pumps, with occasional light commercial systems up to 5 tons.
- Perform preventative maintenance such as coil cleaning, electrical inspections, refrigerant checks, airflow testing, and system performance evaluations.
- Identify underlying system issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
Sales & Comfort Advising
- Conduct in-home consultations and prepare estimates for HVAC repairs, system replacements, and indoor air quality (IAQ) solutions.
- Present clear repair-versus-replacement options, explaining cost, efficiency, and long-term value to homeowners.
- Serve as a trusted advisor by educating customers on comfort, energy efficiency, and system longevity.
- Close approved work and coordinate handoff to installation or service teams as needed.
Customer Experience
- Provide a professional, courteous, and educational customer experience during every interaction.
- Clearly explain findings, recommendations, and pricing in a way that builds trust and confidence.
- Ensure customer satisfaction from initial diagnosis through completed service or sale.
Coordination & Documentation
- Work closely with the Operations Manager, Dispatch, and Purchasing to schedule service calls, order equipment and parts, and manage workload efficiently.
- Accurately document diagnostics, service work, estimates, and recommendations in company systems for billing, tracking, and follow-up.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience (15+ years strongly preferred) as an HVAC Service Technician, with a strong track record in diagnostics and repairs.
- Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC systems, including residential and light commercial units.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools, gauges, and repair equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex HVAC issues independently and efficiently.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an HVAC trade school program preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or at heights.
- Comfortable working in varying weather conditions typical of Tampa’s climate.
