Commercial Appliance Repair Technician

Here you go — Indeed's clean structure, UDG's voice and filter built in. Drop-in ready.

Job Summary

UDG Services is a veteran-owned (SDVOSB) appliance repair company serving West Michigan restaurants, schools, churches, senior living facilities, and homes. We're hiring an experienced Commercial Appliance Repair Technician to anchor our commercial service line across food service, hospitality, and retail environments.

In this role you'll diagnose, repair, and maintain the equipment that keeps commercial kitchens and back-of-house operations running — ice machines, commercial dishwashers, ranges, ovens, fryers, griddles, and the gas, electrical, and refrigeration systems behind them. When commercial demand has gaps, you'll flex into residential appliance work, and you'll own callback and warranty visits across both sides because you're the kind of tech who'd rather slow down and fix it right than rush and see it again next week.

This is a single-tech, in-the-field role with direct office support for dispatch, parts, and customer communication — and No layers, no politics, no corporate runaround.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair commercial appliances including refrigeration units, ranges, ovens, fryers, griddles, dishwashers, ice machines, and prep equipment using schematics and technical manuals
  • Troubleshoot gas systems on hot-side equipment: pilot assemblies, thermopiles, gas valves, ignition modules, and manifold pressure
  • Diagnose commercial refrigeration: sealed system basics, defrost circuits, controls, and component-level repair
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment lifespan
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and tech sheets accurately to guide every repair
  • Cross over to residential appliance service calls when the schedule calls for it
  • Take ownership of callback and warranty visits — diagnose the root cause, not just the symptom
  • Communicate clearly with kitchen managers, business owners, homeowners, and the office
  • Document every job in our system the same day — every part, every photo, every note. No exceptions.
  • Maintain detailed service records for reporting, warranty, and customer history
  • Operate a company service van safely and keep it stocked, clean, and professional

Qualifications

  • 2+ years hands-on commercial appliance repair experience (required — this is not an entry-level seat)
  • Strong gas troubleshooting experience on commercial cooking equipment
  • Working knowledge of commercial refrigeration systems and component-level diagnosis
  • Familiarity with major commercial brands: Vulcan, Garland, Pitco, Frymaster, Imperial, Southbend, True, Traulsen, Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Hobart, and similar
  • Residential appliance experience a strong plus — you'll cross over often enough that it matters
  • EPA 608 certification required (or willingness to test within 60 days of hire)
  • CFESA training or factory certifications a strong plus — we'll support continued certification for the right person
  • Comfortable reading wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Strong customer service skills and clear communication with both commercial and residential customers
  • Smartphone-comfortable — every job is documented in our system the same day
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, ability to pass background check and drug screen

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience and certifications — we pay for skill, not just for showing up
  • Performance and documentation bonuses on top of base pay (the techs who do the job and document it right earn meaningfully more — by design)
  • Company van, fuel card, uniform, and parts account
  • Marcone and Reliable Parts accounts already established — you won't be chasing parts on your own dime
  • Manufacturer training support and CFESA pathway for the right person
  • Year-round commercial work — no seasonal slowdown
  • A small, faith-driven team that prays together, shows up for each other, and means it

Pay: $19.00 - $30.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Flexible schedule

Application Question(s):

  • A restaurant calls at 6 a.m. — their gas fryer won't light. The pilot is out and won't stay lit when they try to relight it. What are the first three things you check on-site, and why?
  • The brand and type of commercial equipment you're most confident on, and one repair from the last year you're proud of.
  • One sentence on why you want to work for a small, veteran-owned shop instead of a big regional service company.

Work Location: In person
