Position Summary

The Commercial HVAC Piping Installer is a skilled field technician responsible for the layout, fabrication, and installation of refrigeration and hydronic piping systems across commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects. This role works under the direction of a Lead Installer or Foreman to deliver precision pipe work that meets design specifications, code requirements, and Meriton quality standards. The Piping Installer is a core contributor to MOAC's construction production capacity and is expected to perform with a high degree of technical competency, safety discipline, and professional conduct on every job site.


This position operates across MOAC's construction project portfolio, which includes direct-to-owner design-build, owner-influenced design-build, and plan-and-spec projects delivered to partner general contractors. Piping Installers are frequently the primary craft labor on mechanical systems and play a critical role in schedule execution, inspection readiness, and overall project quality.

Core Responsibilities

  • Refrigeration and Hydronic Piping Installation
  • Install copper, black iron, carbon steel, and stainless steel piping systems for refrigerant, chilled water, hot water, condenser water, steam, and condensate applications
  • Perform pipe layout and routing per engineered drawings, coordination drawings, or BIM/VDC model output
  • Execute all pipe joining methods applicable to scope: soldering, brazing, welding (socket weld, butt weld), threaded, flanged, grooved mechanical (Victaulic or equivalent), and press-fit connections
  • Install pipe supports, hangers, seismic restraints, vibration isolation, and expansion compensation per code and design requirements
  • Install and set valves, strainers, specialties, coils, and other hydronic components as directed
  • Perform rough-in and above-ceiling work in coordination with other trades, maintaining clean spool and alignment consistent with coordination drawings
  • Insulate piping as required by scope including vapor barrier application on cold systems

  • Refrigerant Piping and Systems
  • Install refrigerant suction, discharge, liquid, and hot gas lines per manufacturer and ASHRAE 15 requirements
  • Handle refrigerant line sizing, oil trapping, and pitch requirements consistent with system design
  • Perform leak testing and pressure testing of refrigerant circuits in coordination with the lead technician
  • Assist with refrigerant charging, startup, and system commissioning activities under the direction of a certified technician
  • Maintain EPA 608 Universal certification (required) and handle refrigerants in full compliance with applicable regulations

  • Commercial Ductwork and Mechanical Support
  • Install commercial ductwork systems including rectangular, round, and oval duct, flexible duct, and duct accessories
  • Install roof curbs, curb adapters, and associated equipment support structures
  • Assist with duct system modifications, connections, and transitions as required by project scope
  • Support equipment rigging, setting, and alignment in coordination with the lead installer and foreman

  • Code Compliance and Quality
  • Perform all work in compliance with applicable mechanical codes, ASHRAE standards, SMACNA guidelines, and project specifications
  • Complete installations to a level of quality that passes inspection on first presentation and meets Meriton quality expectations
  • Participate in pre-installation meetings and coordination walkthroughs as directed
  • Maintain accurate daily records of work performed, materials used, and hours expended as required by project management
  • Immediately report non-conformances, field conflicts, or conditions preventing proper installation to the lead installer or foreman

  • Safety and Professionalism
  • Follow all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety requirements including fall protection, hot work, confined space, and lockout/tagout protocols
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area; protect the owner's facility from damage during all phases of installation
  • Represent MOAC and Meriton professionally in all interactions with owners, GC representatives, inspectors, and other trades
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and training programs as required

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC or mechanical piping installation
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least two pipe joining methods (e.g., brazing, welding, threaded, grooved mechanical)
  • Working knowledge of refrigeration and/or hydronic piping systems
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification (required prior to independent refrigerant handling)
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, spool drawings, and coordination documents
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks in varied weather and site conditions

Preferred

  • Completion of or active enrollment in a formal HVAC or pipefitting apprenticeship program
  • Experience with Victaulic / grooved mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with BIM coordination drawings and digital field tools
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Welding certification (AWS D1.1 or equivalent)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a field-based position working across active commercial, industrial, and institutional job sites in the Mid-Ohio region. The Piping Installer will regularly work in mechanical rooms, above ceilings, on rooftops, in confined spaces, and at heights. Work is performed year-round in varied weather conditions. Regular use of hand tools, power tools, pipe threaders, welding and brazing equipment, ladders, and aerial lifts is required. Standard PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots are required at all times on site.
