Commercial Lines Account Manager (Executive Level – Construction Focused)

Overview

Bates Hewett & Floyd is seeking an experienced Commercial Lines Account Manager to support and manage a book of business focused on construction, contractors, heavy equipment, and project-based commercial risks.

This role is ideal for someone who understands the insurance needs of construction businesses, including general contractors, trade contractors, equipment operators, developers, and project-driven accounts. The right candidate will be able to think beyond day-to-day service requests and serve as a trusted advisor to clients whose businesses involve complex contracts, jobsite exposures, equipment, vehicles, and risk-transfer requirements.

This is not a purely transactional service role. We are looking for someone who can manage relationships, anticipate client needs, support producers, and help construction clients protect their businesses, projects, people, and assets.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and retain a book of commercial construction accounts, including general contractors, subcontractors, trade contractors, and equipment-heavy businesses.

Serve as the primary relationship manager for key clients, providing proactive service, guidance, and support throughout the policy year.

Lead the renewal and marketing process, including review and coordination of:

  • General liability
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Commercial auto and fleet exposures
  • Inland marine and contractor’s equipment
  • Builder’s risk
  • Umbrella and excess liability
  • Property coverage
  • Professional liability or contractor’s pollution, when applicable

Review contracts, insurance requirements, and certificate requests to help ensure compliance with project, owner, lender, or general contractor requirements.

Identify and advise on coverage gaps specific to construction risks, including:

  • Additional insured requirements
  • Waivers of subrogation
  • Primary and noncontributory wording
  • Completed operations exposure
  • Subcontractor risk transfer
  • Equipment theft and mobility
  • Jobsite property and materials
  • Auto and driver exposures
  • Workers’ compensation class codes and payroll changes

Work closely with producers to develop long-term risk management and insurance strategies for construction clients.

Coordinate with carriers and brokers that specialize in construction, contractor, and project-based risks.

Oversee policy accuracy, endorsements, audits, certificates of insurance, binders, and compliance documentation.

Support onboarding of new clients and ensure a high-touch transition experience.

Act as an internal quarterback, aligning the service team, producers, carriers, and client expectations.

Maintain strong documentation and follow-up within the agency management system.

What We’re Looking For

3–10+ years of commercial lines experience, preferably agency-side.

Strong working knowledge of property and casualty insurance, especially as it relates to construction and contractor accounts.

Experience working with one or more of the following:

  • General contractors
  • Trade contractors
  • Construction companies
  • Heavy equipment operators
  • Developers or project owners
  • Trucking or fleet-heavy businesses
  • Workers’ compensation-heavy accounts

Ability to think beyond policies and understand how contractors actually operate in the field.

Strong communication skills and confidence working with business owners, project managers, controllers, office managers, and operations teams.

Highly organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple deadlines.

Ability to review insurance requirements and identify potential issues before they become client problems.

Active 2-20 license, or ability to obtain.

Preferred Experience

Background in or exposure to:

  • Construction insurance
  • Contractor risk management
  • Builder’s risk
  • Workers’ compensation audits
  • Contractual risk transfer
  • Large certificate-holder lists
  • Commercial auto fleets
  • Inland marine and contractor’s equipment schedules

Experience with large, complex accounts involving multiple policies, entities, locations, vehicles, and projects.

Familiarity with independent agency systems such as Applied Epic, AMS360, or similar platforms.

Experience supporting surety, bonds, or construction-related compliance is a plus.

What Makes This Role Different

Focus on real-world, asset-heavy businesses—not just office or Main Street risks.

Opportunity to work closely with contractors, business owners, and project-driven clients.

Direct impact on helping clients protect their jobsites, equipment, employees, contracts, and long-term business value.

High level of client interaction and strategic input.

Strong opportunity to grow into a senior account manager, construction risk advisor, or producer role.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a proactive commercial lines professional who understands that construction clients need more than policy service. They need someone who can help manage deadlines, contracts, certificates, audits, renewals, equipment schedules, and jobsite exposures with accuracy and urgency.

This person should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where details matter, timelines are tight, and clients rely on the agency as a true business partner.

Pay: $40,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Palatka, FL 32177
