Commercial Loan Underwriter

The primary purpose of this position is to assist TBACU to live out its mission, “To serve our community and build trusted relationships.” A key component of this service is to identify members’ needs and provide appropriate TBACU product solutions which ultimately helps the credit union grow. To adequately and effectively serve members and TBACU team members by providing prompt and accurate financial data and maintaining financial security.

Responsible for evaluating the financial health of commercial loan applicants by conducting in-depth credit analyses and preparing detailed reports. This role supports sound lending decisions by assessing risk, interpreting financial data, and collaborating with lending teams to ensure compliance and accuracy. Encourage positive communication with internal and external members in accordance with credit union service standards. Actively promote credit union sales and service culture.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Ensure outstanding service to internal and external members is delivered aligned with our Service Standards, Service Behaviors & Expectations.
  • Meet established expectations.
  • Analyze financial statements and credit data to assess the creditworthiness of commercial loan applicants and existing members.
  • Review, analyze, and underwrite member business loans within established authority and policies.
  • Prepare detailed credit analysis reports and recommendations for loan approvals or denials.
  • Have a strong understanding of state and federal Member Business Lending rules and regulations.
  • Support other lending areas as needed, including consumer and mortgage lending.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of credit analysis and loan documentation.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge and ensure compliance with credit union policies and standards as well as all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of credit union products, specifically as they relate to commercial products and services.
  • Maintain confidentiality by avoiding unauthorized disclosure of member information.
  • Ability to be bonded.
  • Ability to clear credit and criminal history check.
  • Compliance with the U.S Patriot Act and the Credit Union’s Bank Secrecy and OFAC Policies and Procedures.
  • Compliance with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Credit Union’s Information Security program, maintaining the privacy and security of information, systems, and locations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct thorough financial analysis including ratio analysis, cash flow analysis, and trend analysis.
  • Verify, spread and analyze commercial/ag member financials using analytics software for preparation of loan packages and credit presentations.
  • Oversee documentation, monitor and review member files and loan performance.
  • Complete risk ratings and file review of commercial credit when necessary. Proactively monitor existing loans for changes in financial condition and risk.
  • Collaborate with team to gather necessary documentation and information.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of credit policies and procedures.
  • Assist in gathering necessary information for auditors and examiners and work with the audit team as requested.
  • Utilize Abrigo/Sageworks software for credit analysis and risk rating when applicable.
  • Project professional and courteous behavior.
  • Provide routine information on credit union products and services.

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Able to sit or stand for 2-4 hours at a time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Remote capable position.
  • Will require occasional travel for training or meetings.
  • Collaborative and professional work environment.
  • Must maintain a neat and orderly work area.
  • Protect the confidentiality of credit union employees and members by locking or removing items from desk/workstation when away.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalent work experience, preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Credit Analyst/Underwriter.
  • Experience with Abrigo/Sageworks software is highly desirable.
  • Excellent understanding of math applications.
  • Possess excellent listening, clear verbal and professional written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with credit union operations and lending practices is preferred.
  • Proficient in Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Suite/ o365 Suite.
    • Advanced ability and experience with using Excel
    • Strong typing (Includes: 10 keys) and basic technology problem solving skills.
