Commercial Portfolio Risk Analyst

Job Overview


The Commercial Portfolio Risk Analyst is responsible for independent monitoring and analysis of the Bank’s commercial loan portfolio, with emphasis on CRE concentration management, NAICS industry exposure, stress testing, construction loan risk oversight, and Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL/CECL) support.

This role provides risk transparency to executive management and the Board and supports regulatory compliance in a growth-oriented commercial banking environment.


Principal Accountabilities


Responsible for independent monitoring and analysis of the Bank’s commercial loan portfolio, with emphasis on CRE concentration management, NAICS industry exposure, stress testing, construction loan risk oversight, and Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL/CECL) support. Monitoring is to be conducted through regular reporting that is to be accurate, efficient and timely. Represent the Bank to both internal and external customers in a courteous professional manner in face-to-face, written and telephone communications.

This role provides risk transparency to executive management and the Board and supports regulatory compliance in a growth-oriented commercial banking environment.

Accountable for adherence to compliance standards including Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), effectiveness of communication materials and messages, as well as timely delivery of communication initiatives. Actively protect confidentiality of Advisor, customer and internal organizational information. Demonstrate Horizon Bank’s commitment to the communities we serve through involvement in local organizations and events.


Duties


Credit Quality Reporting

  • Past Due Loan Monitoring and Reporting
  • Migration Reporting
  • Criticized and Classified Loan Reporting
  • Preparation of Monthly/Quarterly Asset Quality Reports including memo and charts
  • Analysis and comparison to UBPR Peer group

CRE & Concentration Risk Management

  • Monitor Commercial Real Estate (CRE) concentrations in accordance with Interagency CRE Guidance.
  • Track construction and land development (C&D) exposure levels relative to capital.
  • Analyze non-owner occupied CRE, multifamily, retail, office, hospitality and other segments.
  • Provide quarterly concentration reporting to ERM, and Credit Policy and Risk Committee
  • Recommend concentration limits and portfolio diversification strategies.

NAICS Industry Analysis (C&I Focus)

  • Monitor portfolio exposure by NAICS code.
  • Identify emerging industry risks cyclical vulnerabilities.
  • Prepare sector-specific stress summaries (e.g., manufacturing, healthcare, distribution, construction).
  • Track criticized/classified asset migration by industry.
  • Provide forward-looking commentary tied to economic trends.

Stress Testing and Sensitivity Analysis

  • Conduct periodic portfolio stress testing including:
    • Interest rate shocks
    • Vacancy and cap rate expansion scenarios
    • Recessionary GDP scenarios
    • DSCR compression analysis
  • Evaluate impact on capital, earnings, and ACL.
  • Support capital planning and enterprise risk management initiatives.
  • Prepare stress test documentation for regulators and internal audit.

Allowance for Credit Loss (ACL/ CECL)

  • Support quarterly ACL calculations under CECL framework.
  • Analyze qualitative factors and economic forecast adjustments.
  • Validate segmentation (CRE, C&I, Construction, Owner-Occupied, etc.).
  • Prepare documentation for external auditors and regulatory exams.
  • Assist with model governance and independent validation processes.

Construction Loan Oversight

  • Perform periodic reviews of construction portfolio including:
    • Budget tracking and cost-to-complete analysis
    • Interest reserve adequacy
    • LTV compliance and updated appraisals
    • Take-out and absorption risk
  • Identify projects exhibiting early warning signs.
  • Track and report un-stabilized properties and stabilization trends

Regulatory & Board Reporting

  • Prepare portfolio risk dashboards for:
    • Board of Directors ERM Committee
    • Credit Committee
  • Assist with regulatory exam preparation and information request.
  • Ensure documentation aligns with safety and soundness expectations for an $8-$10B institution.

Governance & Policy Support

  • Assist in development and monitoring of:
    • CRE concentration limits
    • Industry caps
    • Risk rating migration tracking
  • Support credit policy enhancements.
  • Maintain independent oversight from loan production.

Additional tasks/duties as assigned


Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
  • 5-7 years in commercial credit, portfolio management, loan review, or risk analytics.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • CRE underwriting and concentration guidance
    • C&I lending structures
    • Construction lending risk
    • CECL / ALLL methodology
    • Regulatory expectations for banks approaching $10B threshold
  • Advanced Excel modeling
  • Regression Analysis
  • Experience with portfolio reporting systems
  • Ability to build Board-ready presentations
  • Knowledge of NAICS classifications framework
