Commissioning Engineer — Job Description
Overview
Plan, execute, and validate commissioning, start-up, and handover of systems and equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation meeting design intent and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, procedures, checklists, and test protocols (site FAT/SAT, loop tests, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up).
- Prepare and review commissioning documentation: commissioning schedules, punch lists, ITPs, commissioning dossiers, and O&M handover packs.
- Coordinate and lead commissioning activities onsite with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control, civil), contractors, vendors, and client representatives.
- Witness and perform functional tests, pre-commissioning checks, loop checks, instrument calibrations, and system integration tests; record results and raise NCRs/RFIs as required.
- Verify equipment installation, alignment, and readiness; ensure tagging, tagging, and documentation accuracy for as-built records.
- Support DCS/PLC configuration, logic verification, IO checks, and interface testing; collaborate with control engineers for safe start-up sequences.
- Execute performance tests and assist with system tuning, troubleshooting, and optimization during commissioning and ramp-up.
- Ensure HSE compliance during commissioning: permit-to-work, risk assessments, method statements, toolbox talks, and safe isolation procedures.
- Manage commissioning schedules, identify risks/delays, and propose recovery actions to meet project milestones.
- Coordinate vendor inspections, witness FAT/SAT, review loop diagrams, datasheets, and factory test reports.
- Capture and close commissioning punch-list items; produce commissioning reports and lessons-learned documentation.
- Train operations/maintenance teams on system operation, emergency procedures, and maintenance requirements; hand over documentation and spares lists.
- Support final handover and post-commissioning support (warranty period troubleshooting, performance verification).
Required Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control, or relevant engineering discipline.
- 3–7+ years commissioning experience in relevant sector (oil & gas, power, petrochemical, utilities, industrial), adjustable by seniority.
- Hands-on experience with commissioning procedures, loop checks, FAT/SAT, IO verification, and site start-up activities.
- Familiarity with PLC/DCS systems, control logic, HMI, and basic automation troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of mechanical/electrical installation practices, instrumentation, and testing/calibration.
- Knowledge of industry standards and codes relevant to sector (API, IEC, ASME, NEC, or local equivalents).
- Competence in preparing and reviewing technical documentation and commissioning reports.
- Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills; ability to work under schedule pressure.
- Willingness to work onsite, including possible shift/rotational patterns and travel to remote or offshore locations.
Preferred
- Experience with specific tools/software: AutoCAD, SmartPlant, MS Project, commissioning/test management tools.
- Certifications: safety/permit training (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH), offshore survival (BOSIET), or relevant sector qualifications.
- Prior experience with HVAC, fire alarm/suppression systems, building services, or specialized process equipment depending on project type.
- Experience leading commissioning teams or managing complex commissioning packages.
Pay: QAR131.20 - QAR261.10 per hour
