The Children’s Advocacy Centers of Virginia (CACVA) is the state chapter supporting 19 local CACs across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Together, we work to ensure that every child who has experienced abuse or trauma receives a coordinated, compassionate, and evidence-based response. With a small but dedicated staff, CACVA strengthens local centers through training, legislative advocacy, and statewide initiatives that protect and heal children, while supporting their families.
CACVA seeks an experienced Communications Director to lead and professionalize our communications, advocacy messaging, and public relations efforts. This position is central to ensuring a unified, credible voice across Virginia’s CAC network. The Communications Director will provide local CACs with ready-to-use tools, messaging templates, advocacy resources, and training opportunities, helping them focus more time on what matters most: serving children and families.
This role is ideal for a communications professional with a passion for child advocacy, public policy, and nonprofit impact who is able to work both independently and within a team.
Strategic Communications
· Develop and implement a comprehensive statewide communications strategy.
· Create and maintain consistent messaging across CACVA and all member centers.
· Provide templates and toolkits for newsletters, fact sheets, legislative briefs, and media outreach, along with CAC direct service resources.
Legislative Advocacy Support
· Prepare advocacy toolkits and talking points for CACs prior to and during General Assembly sessions.
· Support testimony and legislative engagement with fact sheets, one-pagers, and impact reports.
· Lead coordinated statewide awareness and advocacy campaigns.
Media & Public Relations
· Serve as spokesperson when appropriate; craft press releases and public statements.
· Build and maintain media relationships across the state.
· Develop and manage CACVA’s digital presence (social media, website, e-newsletters).
Training, Technical Assistance & Capacity Building
· Provide training to CAC leadership and staff in media relations, messaging, and advocacy skills as requested.
· Provide responsive technical assistance to member centers on various matters.
· Support member centers without communications staff by producing professional, shareable, brandable resources and materials.
Internal Communications
· Ensure timely and consistent communication across the network of Virginia CACs.
· Provide rapid-response messaging and guidance during crises or as requested.
Qualifications
· Education: Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Public Policy, or a related field (preferred); Bachelor’s degree in related field (required).
· At least five years of progressive experience in communications, advocacy, or public relations.
· Experience with Children’s Advocacy Centers, child welfare, or related human services strongly preferred.
Skills
· Exceptional written and verbal communication.
· Engaging and dynamic speaker.
· Knowledge of advocacy and nonprofit communications.
· Ability to develop mission-aligned, professional, and visually polished communications materials with strong attention to clarity, branding, and presentation.
· Ability to train, mentor, and support professionals statewide.
· Trauma-informed and culturally responsive communication expertise.
