About the National Healthy Start Association

The National Healthy Start Association (NHSA) is committed to improving birth outcomes and reducing poor outcomes in maternal and infant health. Through evidence-based programs, technical assistance, and policy leadership, NHSA strengthens communities and supports families nationwide. The MCH Policy Innovation Program MCH PIP advances this mission by promoting innovative approaches to public health practice through city, county, or state policy solutions.

Position Overview

NHSA’s MCH PIP Program is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Communications Intern to support communications, content development, and digital engagement activities. The intern will contribute to strengthening NHSA’s visibility, policy voice, and programmatic impact through high‑quality writing, digital media management, and product development.

This is an excellent opportunity for college students with interests in public health, maternal and child health, and health policy to gain real‑world experience in nonprofit communications.

Key Responsibilities

Digital Content & Website Management

  • Update and maintain website content using WordPress, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with NHSA branding.
  • Support content organization, uploads, page edits, and formatting across relevant MCH PIP webpages.

Product & Resource Development

  • Assist in developing communication materials, program tools, briefs, and reports.
  • Support drafting, editing, and layout of program resources and publications.

Social Media & Policy Communications

  • Create engaging social media content highlighting NHSA’s policy priorities, advocacy work, and maternal and child health issues.
  • Draft posts, graphics, and messaging for platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, or X.

Presentation & Multimedia Support

  • Support the development of PowerPoint presentations, slide decks, and visual communication tools for trainings, meetings, and events.
  • Ensure materials reflect accurate messaging and consistent branding.

Qualifications

  • Graduate-level students pursuing communications, media, or related field; public policy/ administration, public health, or graphic design. Strong undergraduate candidates will also be considered.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Experience using CANVA required, with knowledge of best practices in graphic design.
  • High level of attention to detail, organization, and follow‑through.
  • Familiarity with WordPress or comparable content management systems preferred.
  • Understanding of social media strategy and digital communications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment

Compensation & Schedule

  • Monthly stipend through September 2026, continuance dependent on funding.
