Scope of Responsibilities
The Communications Specialist assists in coordinating, developing, and implementing a strategic communications and marketing plan. This role encompasses branding, media relations, crisis communication, website and social media management, all aspects of publication creation, and supervision of the Communications Assistant.
Performance Responsibilities

Lead the production of Excelsior, the district’s printed newsletter, by overseeing content creation, photography, interviewing, and distribution logistics.

Strengthen the district’s brand identity by designing and producing high-quality marketing materials, advertisements, and school publications.

Partner with schools to surface and promote success stories, student achievements, and key district activities.

Manage the weekly internal digital newsletter by contributing content, editing, and proofreading.

Manage all social media presence and website updates, ensuring all digital content is in full compliance with digital accessibility (WCAG 2.0) standards.

Develop and execute a comprehensive annual social media content calendar.

Utilize data analytics to evaluate the performance of social media accounts, marketing campaigns, and website engagement.

Liaise with internal departments and external partners to align communications with student achievement goals.

Draft speeches, talking points, press releases, and media advisories.

Act as the official district spokesperson and handle emergency communications, such as school closings, as required.

Proofread and edit content created by other departments.

Ensure all internal and external messaging is consistent, adheres to the district’s brand standards, and represents KPS’ mission.

Leverage graphic design expertise to create signs, flyers, banners, and promotional merchandise.

Maintain media relations by managing contact lists, responding to media inquiries, coordinating interviews, and monitoring and analyzing media coverage.

Assist with crisis management communication as needed.

Organize and manage storage and accessibility of digital assets and publications.

Provide communications-related professional development.

Approve community flyers for distribution on Peachjar.

Support special events, including opening day convocation, ribbon cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies, and the retirement dinner.

Attend Board of Education meetings when needed.

Attend community and school events in the evenings and on weekends to represent KPS and to take photos or videos.

Supervise the Communications Assistant.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or related field.

Minimum of three years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role.

Evidence of excellent communication, including writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

Demonstrated experience creating content and managing websites and social media platforms.

Proven ability to successfully manage multiple projects concurrently.

Flexibility to cover events during the evening and/or weekend.

Ability to form collaborative work relationships.

Proficient use of Google Suite and graphic design software.

Evidence of a desirable work record (high accuracy, low absenteeism, flexibility, and good performance).

Possess a high level of organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and effectively in stressful situations.

Maintain integrity and an ethical approach to duties and responsibilities.
Desirable Qualifications

Accreditation in Public Relations (APR)

Member of the Michigan School Public Relations Association (MSPRA)

Member of the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA)

School public relations experience.

Knowledge of Kalamazoo Public Schools.
