Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Communications Specialist Consultant provides high-level writing, editing, and web content development support across multiple platforms. This temporary role is responsible for producing clear, compelling, audience-focused communications—with a strong emphasis on website and digital content—that support organizational goals, brand alignment, and strategic priorities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience producing high-level written content for websites and other digital platforms, as well as print and marketing materials
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly understand complex topics and communicate about them clearly and effectively for diverse audiences
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience working in a consulting or temporary communications role
  • Hands-on experience with content management systems (CMS) and web publishing workflows
  • Familiarity with digital marketing concepts, SEO best practices, and/or social media management tools
  • Experience supporting executive-level and/or organization-wide communications
  • Experience collaborating on website strategy, content audits, or digital content updates


Required Certifications or Licensure

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Office of University Relations is to strengthen brand identity and increase local, regional and national awareness of the UNCW mission; enhance internal communications between administration and faculty/students and among cross-departmental colleagues; and create and implement more effective communications processes for OUR support requests, media relations, campus and crisis communications, etc.
