The Daily Press in Escanaba is seeking a COMMUNITY EDITOR

The role of community editor is an opportunity to lead a team

that is committed to excellence in journalism through service and

leadership in the community. The Daily Press, based in Escanaba,

Michigan, is seeking a leader that will serve the community and

our readers through effective local reporting.

The community editor will be responsible for directing the

newsroom staff in writing and producing a newspaper and

digital platforms that inform the community with timely, accurate,

interesting, and compelling news, sports, and feature stories of

local interest. The managing editor will be responsible for hiring,

developing, scheduling, and motivating the newsroom team.

We are looking for a candidate who is positive, outgoing, self motivated,

detail-oriented, and willing to quickly adapt to meet the

community’s needs. This is a unique opportunity to join our team

and to continue to uphold the values of excellence and service

that The Daily Press has provided to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

since March 19, 1909.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee all editorial department operations.
  • Adapt to an ever-evolving journalism industry, which requires

flexibility, creativity, and implementation of synergistic solutions.

  • Help to develop and maintain an effective and efficient editorial

department strategy that focuses on local reporting of news,

sports, people, entertainment, the arts, and the outdoors.

  • Be hands-on with the newsroom as a part of the team, which includes

writing, editing, and website maintenance. The community editor

will help direct daily coverage and lead a daily budget meeting; plan

long-term enterprise projects; work with reporters to improve their

copy; provide training and cross-training for various newsroom

roles; work with page designers to improve the newspaper’s

appearance; write and report on important local happenings; and

keep the community informed in a timely manner at dailypress.net.

  • Uphold the newspaper’s high standards of journalism.
  • Oversee the newspaper’s digital presence through its website

and also its social media platforms.

  • Assist in the process for talent acquisition to recruit and retain

high quality employees with an opportunity to grow within the

company.

  • Enhance the newspaper’s presence in the community.
  • Coordinate and work cooperatively with other newspaper

departments to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of

newspaper operations.

Requirements

  • Significant relevant newsroom experience. This position requires

exceptional writing and editing skills, solid leadership skills, and

editorial writing ability.

  • Excellent communication skills to deal with staff, readers,

community leaders, public officials, other department heads, and

the publisher.

  • Ability to plan and work efficiently to meet deadlines.
