Community News Reporter

The Baltimore Sun is looking for energetic, curious reporters to cover Maryland’s communities with urgency and purpose.

This role focuses on the local institutions and neighborhood issues that shape daily life — from town halls and school systems to development, public safety, and the concerns residents raise in their own communities. We’re looking for journalists with sharp instincts, a strong work ethic, and the curiosity to push beyond surface-level coverage.

Community reporters are often the first to spot emerging issues, hold local institutions accountable, and identify stories that deserve deeper reporting.

Essential Functions

• Report quickly and accurately on breaking and developing local news.
• Cover local government, schools, neighborhoods, and community issues with fairness and urgency.
• Develop sources and build relationships within the communities you cover.
• Identify emerging issues, trends, and concerns that warrant deeper reporting.
• Generate story ideas regularly and pursue enterprise beyond scheduled meetings and events.
• Produce clear, engaging digital journalism using text, photos, and other storytelling tools.
• Work with editors and visual journalists to strengthen reporting and presentation.
• Use audience feedback and engagement insights to inform coverage.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Internship experience or early professional reporting experience preferred.
• Strong writing ability, curiosity, and sound news judgment.
• Interest in covering local government, public institutions, and community issues.
• Ability to report accurately and move quickly under deadline.
• Commitment to fairness, accuracy, and accountability journalism

Salary Range: $40,000 - $50,000

Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors such as experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
