Star Local Media is a digital-first community news organization serving cities across North Texas. We focus on hyper-local reporting that keeps residents informed about local government, schools, public safety, business, and community issues.

We are seeking a full-time News Reporter to join our newsroom and provide consistent, accurate coverage across our markets.

Position Overview

The News Reporter is responsible for covering day-to-day local news and developing meaningful community coverage. This is a hybrid position, requiring a mix of in-office work, field reporting, and remote work.

Candidates must be able to attend meetings, events, and breaking news assignments in person and work from the office on designated days.

Responsibilities

• Report and write daily local news stories
• Cover city council meetings, school boards, and other public meetings
• Report on education, public safety, local government, business, and community topics
• Develop sources within assigned coverage areas
• Conduct interviews in person, by phone, and via email
• Pitch story ideas and follow developing local news
• Work closely with editors to plan coverage and meet deadlines
• Follow AP Style and Star Local Media editorial standards
• Publish content to a digital-first platform
• Occasional evening or weekend work may be required

Qualifications

• Journalism degree or equivalent professional experience preferred
• Entry-level to early-career reporters encouraged to apply
• Strong writing, reporting, and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
• Familiarity with local government reporting is a plus
• Knowledge of North Texas communities strongly preferred
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a newsroom team

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range: $36,000–$40,000, depending on experience
• Regular bylines on Star Local Media platforms
• Opportunity to build a strong local journalism portfolio

Pay: $36,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
