El Puente seeks a responsible, detail-oriented, and committed Community School Coordinator. This position reports to the Community School Director and will work with success mentors, parent coordinator, principal, the staff, members, and the community. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, flexible, team-oriented environment and is motivated by the opportunity to assist in creating a dynamic culture. Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth-centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance social and environmental justice. Our mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led movements of self-determination through a holistic leadership and membership program model, as a high-impact youth and community development organization.

El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico, and beyond, El Puente remains at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates /impacts social policy locally and nationally.

As a staff member of El Puente, the Community Coordinator is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy, and principles of the organization.

Job Position Overview

The Community School Coordinator is a vital support role within the Community School model, supporting youth development in socio-emotional learning (SEL), critical thinking, and technology discernment. This position reports directly to the Community School Director and plays a key role in fostering meaningful connections between high school and middle school students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Community School Director to manage daily operations of the high school–middle school pairing.
  • Support the development and implementation of the pathways model connecting high school mentors with middle school mentees, with the intention of scaling the model across school communities.
  • Co-create curriculum through a collaborative process involving mentors and mentees, focused on socio-emotional learning, critical thinking, and technology education (including social media usage, content creation, and technological discernment).
  • Serve as a liaison between the high school and middle school to develop a clear pathway for higher education and professional youth development.
  • Communicate regularly with the Youth Leadership Coordinator at MS 50 to track middle school mentee progress, documented supports, and ongoing needs.
  • Coordinate with afterschool facilitators for the high school men’s group (Liberators) and women’s group (Strong Sophisticated Sisters) at El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice to monitor participant progress and provide support.
  • Develop and facilitate trainings, activities, and workshops for high school mentors to support achievement of the El Puente Principle of Mastery; ensure middle school mentees are grounded in the El Puente Principle of Development through mentoring sessions and activities.
  • Monitor attendance, log session hours, and review session reports with mentors.
  • Maintain organized documentation related to mentor supervision and program implementation.
  • Gather and incorporate feedback from mentees to co-create an engaging and enriching program experience.
  • Foster a learning environment in which high school mentors develop leadership skills and middle school mentees build voice and agency.
  • Coordinate and host events, workshops, and trips for participants in the Ascend Program.

Education:

Relevant education preferred (degree requirements may vary)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth preferred

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, both in-person and by phone
  • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage caseloads effectively
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and community partners
  • Ability to comply with all applicable child safety requirements
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful mentoring environment that embraces diversity
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

Location: This is a part-time, in-person position based in Brooklyn, NY.

Schedule: 25 hours per week/4 days. Work days and hours may shift depending on scheduling needs.

Salary and Benefits

  • 26.37 hourly
