Compounding Pharmacy Technician

Chemistry Rx is a compounding and specialty pharmacy dedicated to providing the highest quality of customized medication to patients, providers and other organizations across the entire healthcare continuum.

Our team of nurses, clinical pharmacists, and clinical care support work in synchrony with healthcare professionals, insurance companies and– most importantly– the patient.

We are looking to grow our team with great Compounding Pharmacy Technicians!

Title: Compounding Pharmacy Technician

Supervised by: Pharmacist

Job Responsibilities:

Using a computerized compounding system, weigh and record the chemicals included in the formulas; then combine the chemicals into the appropriate dosage form as requested by the prescription. Properly use all equipment in the lab that is necessary to make non-sterile compounds, following all safety and USP guidelines for preparation of compounded medications. Fully trained in USP <795>. Interacting professionally and efficiently while upholding HIPAA standards. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; follow cleanroom protocol, testing, and documentation. Follow pharmacist instructions and orders with minimal supervision, compounding medication according to prescription with the standards of state pharmacy board and federal laws; review labels, compounding documents, and prescriptions for content.

Job Duties:

  • Sterilize surfaces and equipment and prepare the pharmacy for opening and closing
  • Resolve issues when they arise
  • Select the appropriate medicine and measure dosages to compound prescription formulations
  • Sort, stock, label medication and monitor inventory
  • Clean and maintain compounding hoods, scales, sink, and countertops used for compounding
  • Maintain and clean any pharmacy equipment used for compounding that may include but is not limited to hoods, scales, mill, unguator, heat sealer, and hot plates.
  • Undertake administrative tasks (e.g., record-keeping) as assigned
  • Compound medications under the supervision of pharmacist
  • Comply with all security measures and quality standards.

Work Environment

This job operates in a Pharmacy. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Compounding knowledge for non-sterile products is also necessary and use of Pharmacy equipment such as mill, unguator, counting trays, hotplates, and scales.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to mix drugs, use computer and other equipment and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to wear PPE to avoid exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, and general hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. in 8-hour shifts

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • Proven experience as pharmacy technician or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of medication and dosage measurement
  • Knowledge of pharmacy law and medical terminology
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Reliable with a keen eye for detail

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 1+ year of related compounding experience preferred
