Comptroller (Remote – US Based)

ABOUT CFO LEVERAGE

CFO Leverage is a fast-growing fractional CFO and bookkeeping firm serving nonprofits exclusively. We partner with mission-driven organizations across the United States — from charter schools and faith-based ministries to social service agencies and advocacy groups — delivering financial clarity, compliance, and strategic guidance.

We operate as an embedded financial team for our clients. Our fractional CFOs own the client relationship at the strategic level, and our Comptrollers are the engine that keeps everything running accurately underneath them. This is a high-trust, high-ownership role on a team that takes its work seriously.

THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced Comptroller to support a portfolio of nonprofit clients on a part-time, fractional basis. You will sit between the bookkeeping team and the fractional CFO — owning the accuracy and integrity of the financials, ensuring compliance, and producing the reporting that drives client decisions.

This is not a data-entry role. We need someone who can think critically about a set of books, identify issues before they become problems, and communicate with confidence to both internal team members and, when needed, client leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and review the work of bookkeepers across a portfolio of nonprofit clients
  • Ensure month-end and year-end close processes are completed accurately and on time
  • Prepare and review financial statements: P&L, Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows, Budget vs. Actual
  • Manage and enforce internal controls across client accounts, including payment approval workflows
  • Ensure proper fund accounting — tracking restricted, unrestricted, and temporarily restricted funds
  • Support audit preparation and serve as primary liaison with external auditors when needed
  • Review and approve vendor payments and bill processing through Bill.com
  • Maintain compliance with US GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Identify and flag financial risks, discrepancies, or control weaknesses to the fractional CFO
  • Train and support bookkeeping staff on best practices and client-specific requirements
  • Assist fractional CFOs with financial analysis, forecasting, and board reporting as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or Comptroller role
  • Significant nonprofit accounting experience — you understand fund accounting, restricted grants, and Form 990
  • Deep proficiency in QuickBooks Online
  • Experience with Bill.com for payment processing and approval workflows
  • Proven ability to manage and review the work of bookkeeping staff
  • Experience supporting or managing external audits
  • Excellent written and verbal communication — you can explain financials clearly to non-financial audiences
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and reliable — clients are counting on you
  • US-based and authorized to work in the United States

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a fractional, outsourced, or multi-client accounting environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Experience with nonprofit board reporting and financial presentations

WHAT MAKES THIS ROLE DIFFERENT

Most Comptroller roles put you in one organization, managing one set of books. At CFO Leverage, you will work across multiple nonprofit clients — which means variety, challenge, and the opportunity to build broad expertise quickly. You will work alongside experienced fractional CFOs, not in isolation. And you will have direct impact on organizations doing meaningful work in their communities.

We are growing fast. People who perform well here will have room to take on more — whether that means a larger client portfolio, a team lead role, or eventually stepping into a fractional CFO position.

WHY CFO LEVERAGE

  • 100% remote — work from anywhere in the US
  • Fractional / part-time structure — flexibility without sacrificing meaningful work
  • Stable, recurring client base — no feast-or-famine freelancing
  • Collaborative team with experienced CFOs who value your expertise
  • Mission-driven clients — every organization you support is doing good in the world
  • Clear growth path as the firm scales

HOW TO APPLY

Apply through Indeed with your resume and a cover letter. In your cover letter, please address:

  • Your experience with nonprofit accounting and fund accounting specifically
  • The size and complexity of the client portfolios or organizations you have managed
  • Your QuickBooks Online and Bill.com proficiency levels
  • Why a fractional / multi-client role appeals to you

We read every application personally. Generic cover letters will not be considered — we are looking for people who understand what this role is and are genuinely excited about it.
