Construction Accounting Manager

D5 Steel is a growing structural steel fabrication and erection contractor serving commercial and industrial construction projects throughout the Southeast. We are seeking an experienced Construction Accounting Manager to oversee all accounting and financial operations while supporting project management, operations, and executive leadership.

This position is ideal for an accounting professional with a strong background in construction accounting, job costing, project billing, and financial management. The successful candidate will play a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, monitoring project performance, managing cash flow, and supporting the continued growth of the company.

Position Summary

The Construction Accounting Manager will be responsible for managing all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing, AIA billing, retainage tracking, financial reporting, and month-end close processes. This role will work closely with project managers and company leadership to ensure accurate project financials and timely reporting.

Although there will be accounting support staff reporting to this position, the role of the Construction Accounting Manager will be “hands on”- requiring to actively participate in data entry, account reconciliations, wire payment processing, and general accounting functions.

Primary Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee & execute all accounting operations and financial reporting activities.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of all financial records.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial performance metrics.
  • Assist ownership with budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning.
  • Coordinate annual reviews, audits, and tax preparation with external CPA firms.

Construction Accounting

  • Maintain accurate job cost reporting for fabrication and erection projects.
  • Track project profitability and provide ongoing cost analysis.
  • Manage Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and reporting.
  • Review and reconcile committed costs, change orders, and project expenditures.
  • Support project managers with cost tracking and project financial analysis.
  • Monitor contract values, billing status, and project cash flow.

Billing & Accounts Receivable

  • Prepare and manage AIA progress billings.
  • Process schedule of values updates and change order billings.
  • Track retainage receivable and ensure timely collection.
  • Monitor customer payment status and collection efforts.
  • Maintain accurate project billing records and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate lien waiver documentation and payment releases.

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management

  • Oversee accounts payable processing and vendor payments.
  • Verify coding of invoices to proper jobs and cost codes.
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Manage subcontractor compliance documentation, including certificates of insurance and W-9s.
  • Ensure timely processing of vendor and subcontractor payments.

Payroll & Compliance

  • Oversee payroll processing and payroll reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Assist with sales tax reporting and filings.
  • Support workers' compensation audits and insurance reporting requirements.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Serve as the primary administrator for Sage accounting software.
  • Develop and improve accounting procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
  • Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and improve financial visibility.
  • Support software integrations and process automation initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of construction accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of job costing and project-based accounting.
  • Experience preparing and managing AIA billings.
  • Experience tracking retainage, change orders, and WIP schedules.
  • Experience managing accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting and general ledger accounting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with Sage accounting software.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in general contracting, structural steel fabrication, specialty contracting, or commercial construction.
  • Experience with multi-project accounting environments.
  • Familiarity with lien waiver management and subcontractor compliance requirements.
  • Experience supervising accounting staff.
