PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

The Content & Editorial Manager plays a central role in fulfilling this mission by serving as the Museum’s primary editorial voice—crafting, stewarding, and championing the words, tone, and messaging that represent the Crocker across every platform and product. This role partners closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications and the Creative & Brand Manager to ensure that all written communications are strategically sound, on-brand, and resonant with the diverse audiences the Museum serves.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Editorial Leadership & Brand Voice
- Serve as the Museum’s primary editorial voice, owning the quality, tone, and consistency of written communications across all channels and product types—from exhibition brochures and program descriptions to advertising copy and donor communications.
- Develop, maintain, and evolve the Museum’s brand voice guidelines; serve as the internal resource and advocate for consistent, compelling language across all departments and touchpoints.
- Own and manage the Museum’s editorial and messaging calendar in coordination with the Director of Marketing & Communications, ensuring content is planned, prioritized, and delivered on schedule.
- Write and edit press releases, media advisories, and institutional statements in collaboration with museum leadership.
- Translate complex curatorial, educational, and institutional content into accessible, engaging language for general and targeted audiences.
- Proofread, edit, and approve written content produced across the marketing department, maintaining a high standard for accuracy, style, and brand alignment.
Content Collaboration & Creative Support
- Partner with Marketing team members to concept and draft content for digital channels; bring a strong editorial perspective to short-form, conversational, and campaign-driven writing.
- Write advertising copy for advertising campaigns with a strong sense of brand voice, audience, and creative concept.
- Collaborate with the Creative & Brand Manager to ensure written and visual elements work together cohesively across campaigns and collateral.
- Support cross-departmental content needs by writing and editing materials for development, education, curatorial, and visitor services teams as requested.
- Contribute to concepting and scripting for video, social, and other multimedia content in partnership with the Content Coordinator.
- Maintain an awareness of cultural sector content trends, storytelling approaches, and communications best practices; bring relevant insights to the team.
General
- Work fluidly across a wide range of writing formats and registers, from institutional long-form to punchy short-form copy, adapting voice and style to channel and audience.
- Represent the Museum with professionalism and enthusiasm in all written and verbal communications.
- Work across marketing systems and tools including website CMS, email platforms, project management software, and content scheduling tools.
- Demonstrate intellectual curiosity about art, culture, and the Crocker’s mission; bring that enthusiasm to the work.
- Collaborate effectively across teams and departments; thrive in a small, nimble team environment where initiative and flexibility are valued.
- Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- 4-6 years of professional writing and editing experience, ideally in a cultural institution, nonprofit, publishing, journalism, or agency setting. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Exceptional writing skills across a range of formats and tones.
- Meticulous editing and proofreading skills; a natural eye for inconsistency, ambiguity, and tone.
- Strong organizational and editorial project management skills; demonstrated ability to manage a content calendar, juggle multiple deadlines, and keep projects moving independently.
- Experience writing advertising or campaign copy with a clear understanding of audience, brand, and creative brief.
- Familiarity with press release writing and media relations fundamentals; experience pitching or working with journalists a plus.
- Comfortable working across digital platforms including website CMS, email marketing tools (Wordfly, Mailchimp, etc.), Microsoft Office suite/OneDrive, and project management software (ClickUp, Asana, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
- Intellectual curiosity, creative problem-solving ability, and genuine enthusiasm for storytelling.
- Punctual and reliable; able to adhere to scheduled hours and meet deadlines consistently.
- Background or demonstrated interest in art, art history, museums, or the cultural sector strongly preferred.
- A writing portfolio or work samples demonstrating range, voice, and editorial judgment is required for consideration.
INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the Museum’s mission, vision, values, strategic plan and institutional DEAI initiatives.
- Commit to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect, cooperation, and openness to other’s perspectives.
- Available for occasional evening, morning, or weekend hours in support of Museum programs and events.
- Represent the Crocker effectively.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Take care to use Crocker resources responsibly and maximize efforts in support of institutional goals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and/or sit for long periods of time. They must have physical dexterity and the ability to carefully handle objects, as well as ability to lift and move items of various weights and sizes. Positions have occasion to lift and/or move objects of 15-20 lbs.

Pay: $62,400.00 - $66,560.00 per year
