Contract Citizenship Class Instructor

As a member of the Immigration and Citizenship Program, you will join an incredibly talented and hardworking division dedicated to assisting adult learners in the preparation for the naturalization interview and exam, helping people to advance Houston Public Library’s impact in the Houston region.

Reporting to the Coordinator of Citizenship Services, the Citizenship Instructor is responsible for providing education to adult learners to prepare for the USCIS naturalization interview, ESL instruction to adult learners preparing for the Civics and English Competency Exams, providing support, education, and connection to local resources. This position may require some evenings and weekends (Saturdays).

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides quality instruction to adult learners who are interested in applying for citizenship.
  • Integrates meaningful classroom activities and valuable experiences that facilitates a student’s learning goals and skills.
  • Supports Citizenship Program at assigned library locations by assuring that students are making level and gains, and by managing students in this program.
  • Travels to multiple Houston Public Library locations across a region of the Houston area to provide scheduled classes weekly.
  • Supports the Coordinator of Citizenship Services with data collection.
  • Supports Immigration and Citizenship Program with outreach activities.
  • Respond to inquiries, requests, and complaints as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Citizenship Services.

Qualifications Education Required: A Bachelor's Degree in Education (K-12 Social Studies, English Language Arts, History, or Adult Education), Teaching, Social Work, or a related field. Years of professional experience may substitute for experience on a year-for –year basis.

Experience Required: Have at least 1 -3 years of experience as the lead instructor in a class for adult immigrants or working as an ESL instructor for adults is required.

Education and Experience Preferences:

Hold a degree in TESOL;

  • Hold TESOL certification from a state licensing agency; or
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience in TESOL instruction in a classroom setting for an adult education program that utilizes a textbook and a structured curriculum.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract, Temporary

Pay: $30.00 per hour
