We are seeking an experienced technical copyeditor to provide part-time editorial support for public-sector communications, technical documents, policy materials, reports, committee agenda items, and other written deliverables.

The selected contractor will edit materials for grammar, clarity, logical structure, consistency, readability, accessibility, and formatting while preserving technical accuracy. Assignments may include:

Technical reports
Policy documents
Committee or board agenda materials
Public-facing communications
Planning, transportation, environmental, or infrastructure documents
Staff reports and briefing materials
Other written communications or editorial collateral

Typical assignments will involve documents prepared by multiple contributors and may require close attention to terminology, tone, orientation, formatting consistency, accessibility, and readability for diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

Required qualifications

Applicants must be able to demonstrate all of the following:

Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
Experience editing technical, policy, regulatory, government, transportation, planning, environmental, infrastructure, or public-sector materials
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, including track changes, comments, document cleanup, and formatting consistency
Strong command of AP Style and professional editorial standards
Ability to improve clarity, flow, organization, consistency, and readability while preserving technical accuracy
Ability to edit complex technical or policy content for professional, committee, stakeholder, or public-facing audiences
Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
Strong attention to detail and consistency
Excellent written communication and organizational skills
Availability to support up to 20 hours per week on a remote, part-time contract basis
Ability to maintain confidentiality of draft materials, policy documents, and internal communications
Must be at least 18 years old

Submission requirements

To be considered, applicants must provide:

Resume or CV showing relevant editorial experience
Brief cover note describing availability and fit for the role
Two to three editing samples, preferably showing markup, track changes, or before-and-after examples involving technical, policy, government, or public-facing content
Hourly rate confirmation
Three professional references from previous projects

Preferred qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who can demonstrate:

Experience editing government, transportation, regional planning, environmental, infrastructure, or policy documents
Experience working with committees, board agenda packets, public meeting materials, staff reports, or public-sector communications
Familiarity with accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 Level AA, Title II, Title VI, Section 508, or plain-language practices
Experience collaborating with multiple authors or subject-matter experts while maintaining a unified editorial voice
Experience editing materials for diverse audiences, including technical staff, elected officials, stakeholders, and members of the public

Other expectations

The selected contractor must be able to coordinate professionally with staff and subject-matter experts, respond promptly to assignments, meet publication and committee deadlines, and provide constructive editorial recommendations when gaps, inconsistencies, or unclear passages are identified.

Pay: $40.00 per hour
