Overview

The Controller plays a critical role in supporting the financial health and stewardship of St. Pius X High School. This position reports to the Director of Finance and is responsible for overseeing the school’s accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting strategic financial planning. The ideal candidate is a proven, strategic leader who can collaborate closely with staff, management, and all department leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting operations, including General Ledger accounting, Accounts Payable, Tuition Management, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses to internal and external stakeholders. Oversee P&L management, balance sheet review, and monthly and annual closing processes. Ensure underlying records are reconciled and clearly support reports.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements. Specific accounting related to non-profit organizations and independent schools is essential.
  • Develop and maintain an effective system of internal controls, procedures and policies, and document and test key processes and dependencies.
  • Evaluate accounting systems to ensure accurate and efficient recording of accounting transactions. Manage the various systems within the area of responsibilities and ensure they integrate with other departments. Stay current on software enhancements and integrations, to make recommendations for improvements and upgrades.
  • Manage, train, and lead accounting staff. Foster a collaborative team environment and encourage professional development. Establish clear performance objectives for the team and each individual.
  • Oversee the audit process, ensuring all schedules and analyses are prepared accurately and timely.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to support the annual budgeting process, including the preparation of departmental budgets, schedules and financial reports. Coordinate with department leads for accurate budgets.
  • Perform forecasting and cash projections as needed for the organization.
  • Assume other duties as deemed needed by school leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Commitment to embrace the Catholic Mission and Dominican Charism at St. Pius X High School.
  • Completion of Safe Haven environment training.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business required.
  • CPA preferred with background in public accounting.
  • Experience of 5-10 years in progressive accounting and finance, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Knowledge in independent school accounting and processes; non-profit industry experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Blackbaud Financial Edge, along with Blackbaud’s integrated systems of Tuition Management and Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Advanced Excel capabilities necessary.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide staff through daily operations and strategic projects.
