About Us:

For over 80 years, Burleson Construction Company, Inc. has been a trusted name in commercial construction throughout the Tri-Cities region. Founded as a family-owned business and operated for three generations, we became employee-owned five years ago—continuing a proud tradition of craftsmanship, integrity, and commitment to our people.

As a small to mid-sized commercial general contractor, we specialize in delivering high-quality projects within an hour’s radius of Johnson City. Our success is built on the strength of our relationships—with our clients, trade partners, and employee-owners—many of whom have spent decades growing with us.

We’re looking for a Controller to join our leadership team at our home office in Johnson City. This role is ideal for someone who values teamwork, stability, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a well-respected, community-focused construction company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all accounting and financial operations, including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and monthly close.
  • Oversee job cost accounting and WIP reporting; ensure accuracy and transparency in project financials.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, forecasts, and management reports for executive leadership.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and policies to ensure compliance with GAAP and company standards.
  • Collaborate with project managers to monitor job performance, budgets, and profitability.
  • Manage relationships with auditors, banks, bonding and insurance partners.
  • Evaluate and enhance accounting systems and software for efficiency and accuracy (experience with Sage 300 CRE is a plus).
  • Provide strategic financial insight to support planning, growth, and operational decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
  • Construction industry experience required, including strong knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
  • Proficiency with construction accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • A collaborative mindset and a desire to contribute to an employee-owned culture.

Why Join Us:

  • Competitive compensation and performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Stable, well-established company with a deep local legacy.
  • Supportive and collaborative work environment where your contributions truly matter.
  • Be part of an employee-owned company where success is shared.

Benefits:

  • 401(k) matching
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
