Overview
Reporting to the President, the Controller will also provide support to the Senior Management Team. This position will be a hands-on, in-person Controller position, responsible for the development of financial management strategy and contributing to the development of the organization’s strategic goals. The Controller will have hands-on, day-to-day responsibility for internal accounting and bookkeeping, planning, implementing, managing, and controlling all financial related activities of the company. The position will not oversee any other staff, but they will be responsible for providing financial direction and updates to others.

Duties

Transactional Accounting

  • Transactional accounting includes invoicing (hourly, percentage of completion, and lump-sum), accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Work with current support staff who provide data input for client/project setup, payables and draft invoicing.

Monthly/Annual Period Closing

  • Perform monthly and annual period closing including reconcile key accounts, prepare adjusting entries, prepare financial statements, and coordinate with company CPA to provide accurate information.
  • Perform all month and year end closing and reconciliations on time.

Payroll

  • Complete payroll process bi-monthly.
  • Manage employee payroll deductions (insurance, charity contributions, etc.) and 401k contributions.

Financial Analysis

  • Financial analysis including cash flow planning, budgeting and variance analysis, WIP calculations and coordinating with CPAs to provide accurate information.

General Accounting / Relationships

  • Collaboration with project managers using project accounting and reports.
  • Advise the President in areas of responsibility including financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and policy matters.
  • Provide input into development for the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication keeping the President informed of all critical financial issues.
  • Interpret and advise senior leadership on financial results, forecasts, trends, and other analysis.
  • Take hands-on position maintaining a comprehensive job cost system.
  • Hands-on development of financial statements including balance sheet, income statement, budget to actual cost reports, and other supplemental reports monthly and meets with department heads to review operations and budget to actual reports and provide direction.
  • Ensure that the company has sufficient liquidity to implement and support the strategic plan and operation goals in accordance with corporate needs and strategic goals.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with financial institutions, CPA firms, insurance, legal, and other professional/community organizations to gain favorable business considerations in accordance with corporate needs and goals.
  • Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with consultants, and respond to any inquiries on payments.
  • Represent the Company and participate in industry associations as deemed appropriate.
  • Manage current accounting procedures, systems, policies, and internal controls and design and implement additional controls as needed.
  • Provide labor reports as requested to clients or to the leadership team.

Tax Compliance / Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with all tax, licensing, and regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare, submit, and pay all tax submissions/filings including unemployment tax, out of state income taxes, etc.

Qualifications

The following are a minimum of pre-requisites for the position of the Controller.

  • Accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of 6 years relative experience. Preferably in architecture / engineering or related industry.
  • Ability to meet all financial deadlines.
  • Lead the financial business components and take ownership of all financial processes and tasks with a high level of integrity, dependability, results-oriented and strong sense of urgency.
  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of database and accounting computer application systems to supply the most accurate financial information.
  • Management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, and results oriented.
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team member who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administrative initiatives.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
