Job Summary

The Controller is responsible for assisting in managing and overseeing the financial operations of Berry Creek Rancheria, ensuring accurate accounting, financial reporting, and compliance with federal, state, and tribal regulations. This position plays a key leadership role in financial planning, budgeting, and policy development to support the economic well-being of the tribal community.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the daily financial operations, including accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements, reports, and analysis for the Tribal Council, CFO, and Tribal Administrator.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines, and all applicable federal, state, and tribal financial regulations.
  • Assist with developing and monitoring budgets, financial policies, and procedures to safeguard tribal assets and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Experience with designing and implementation of internal control systems
  • Assist in coordination of annual audits, including working with external auditors and regulatory agencies.
  • Assist with managing grant and contract financial reporting, ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to finance department staff, fostering professional development and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with tribal departments to provide financial insight and support.
  • Assist in ensuring timely submission of financial reports to federal and state agencies as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; and 5-7 years of experience in general accounting and 3 years management experience.
  • Familiarity with tribal government operations, sovereignty, and economic development principles.
  • Ability to work in a high-performance, fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Strong time management and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive financial information with confidentiality and integrity.
  • Proficiency in MIP (Abila), preferred
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Expert knowledge of accounting principles and techniques.
  • Experience with federal and tribal grant funding and reporting requirements, preferred
  • Understanding of economic development strategies within tribal communities, preferred

Special Requirements

  • Possession of an valid California Driver’s License.
  • Preference will be given to qualified Native American Indians under the Federal Indian Preference Act (43 CFR, 17.3(d)). Applicants claiming Indian preference must submit verification of Indian Heritage, Certified by the Tribe of affiliation, or other acceptable documentation.
  • Applicant must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.

Pay: From $90,000.00 per year
