Controller

Lumos Solar | Thornton, Colorado | Part-Time, Hybrid | 20–30 hours/week

About Lumos Solar

Lumos Solar is a global leader in architectural solar solutions. Founded to accelerate the adoption of solar energy as a mainstream power source, Lumos designs and manufactures premium solar products that integrate clean energy with modern architecture.

We are a small, collaborative team committed to continuous improvement, craftsmanship, and producing the highest-quality solar products available.

The Role

We are looking for a hands-on Controller to own the accounting function at Lumos Solar in a part-time capacity of 20–30 hours per week. This is a working role — you'll be in the books, in the inventory system, and on the production floor, not delegating from a distance. You'll own the monthly close and the cost accounting that tells us how our products are really performing.

This is a high-impact role for someone who likes the details, takes pride in clean books, and wants to understand how a manufactured product moves from raw material to finished good. You'll work directly with leadership and partner closely with operations.

One of our primary goals for this role is to lead the company through securing SBA financing to support our next phase of growth. Direct, hands-on experience preparing a company for and successfully closing SBA financing — including assembling the financial package, working with lenders, and managing the underwriting process — is a meaningful part of what we're looking for.

What You'll DoGeneral Ledger, Close & Financial Reporting

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close end to end — journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and review.
  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts; ensure the integrity and accuracy of all financial data.
  • Prepare timely financial statements and management reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts each month.
  • Support the year-end review or audit and coordinate with our external CPA firm.

Inventory & Cost Accounting

  • Own inventory accounting across raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods.
  • Maintain standard costs and BOMs; investigate and explain purchase price, material usage, and labor variances.
  • Partner with operations on cycle counts, physical inventory procedures, and inventory accuracy.
  • Track product-level margins and surface insights that help leadership make better pricing and production decisions.
  • Refine costing methodology as the product line and manufacturing processes evolve.

What You Bring

  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of a monthly close.
  • Manufacturing background: Direct, hands-on experience with inventory and cost accounting in a manufacturing or product-based business. This is required, not preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA a plus.
  • Systems: Strong proficiency with an ERP or accounting system (NetSuite, or similar) and advanced Excel skills. Experience integrating an ERP with an inventory or production system is a plus.
  • GAAP fluency: Solid working knowledge of US GAAP and the judgment to apply it pragmatically in a small-company setting.
  • Mindset: You're a doer. You like clean reconciliations, accurate inventory, and books that close on time. You're comfortable rolling up your sleeves rather than handing the work to someone else.
  • Communication: Able to translate financial information clearly for non-financial colleagues and partner well with the operations team.
  • SBA financing: Direct experience preparing for and securing SBA financing for a small or mid-sized business, including assembling the financial package, working with lenders, and managing the underwriting process. This is a primary goal of the role.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in solar, clean tech, building products, or architectural products.
  • Experience setting up or improving standard costing in a small manufacturing environment.

What We Offer

  • A meaningful role at a mission-driven company helping to mainstream solar energy.
  • Direct access to leadership and visible impact on the business.
  • A small, collaborative team that values craftsmanship and continuous improvement.
  • Part-time, hybrid schedule (20–30 hours per week) based out of our Thornton, Colorado headquarters, with flexibility on weekly hours and on-site days.
  • Hourly rate of $53 – $67 per hour, depending on experience (equivalent to a $110,000 – $140,000 full-time annual salary), plus prorated paid time off.
