Position Overview
Ennis Electric Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead the company’s accounting and financial operations. This role is ideal for a hands-on financial professional who excels at maintaining accurate financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and providing actionable insights that support business growth and operational excellence. The successful candidate will oversee all accounting functions for a growing electrical contracting organization of approximately 120 employees, ensuring the integrity of financial information, compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and effective cash management. Working closely with executive leadership, project management teams, financial institutions, and external advisors, the Controller will play a key role in supporting the company’s operational and strategic objectives. This position requires a strong background in construction accounting, job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, and financial analysis, along with the ability to build collaborative relationships across the organization. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader who can balance day-to-day financial oversight with process improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and long-term profitability.
Essential Functions
Accounting & Financial Reporting

Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, fixed assets, and cash management

Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP

Maintain accuracy and integrity of financial records and supporting documentation

Perform and review account reconciliations, including bank and balance sheet accounts

Monitor cash flow and develop cash forecasts

Produce financial reports, key metrics, and analysis for management review

Support budgeting and forecasting processes

Analyze financial performance and recommend improvements
Treasury and Cash Management

Manage banking relationships and treasury activities
-
Monitor company cash position
-
Support cash management strategies directed by executive leadership
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
-
Oversee job cost accounting, ensuring accurate allocation of labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and overhead

Maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and support revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion)

Provide project financial reporting and cost analysis to project managers and leadership

Review billing, retention, and change order tracking for accuracy

Identify cost variances and project profitability risks
Payroll Accounting (Financial Oversight)

Oversee payroll accounting processes to ensure accurate financial recording

Review payroll reports, labor allocations, and reconciliations
-
Ensure compliance with applicable payroll tax reporting requirements from an accounting perspective

Determine prevailing wage requirements per state and build into accounting system.
Compliance, Controls & External Reporting

Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and reporting requirements

Coordinate with external CPA firms for audits, reviews, and tax filings
-
Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and accounting procedures
-
Support financial aspects of insurance, bonding, and regulatory audits
-
Maintain relationships with financial institutions and external advisors
Process Management

Establish and maintain standardized accounting procedures
-
Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy

Serve as primary point of contact for external auditors and financial partners
Qualifications
Required
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
-
5–7+ years of progressive accounting experience
-
Experience with financial reporting, general ledger, and internal controls
-
Strong knowledge of GAAP
-
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
-
Experience with accounting software systems such as Vista Viewpoint
Preferred

Experience in construction, contracting, or project-based industries
-
Knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting

CPA, CFMA Certified, or equivalent certification
