Cooling Tower Reliability Technician (HVAC Systems)

Step into the field: keep cooling towers running safely, efficiently, and reliably

For 60+ years, Johnson Barrow has partnered with engineers, contractors, and building owners across the Pacific Northwest to deliver high-performance HVAC solutions that balance efficiency, uptime, and occupant comfort. We’re an entrepreneurial team that thinks like owners, moves with urgency, and stands by our customers from concept through completion.

Note: This is an HVAC/mechanical role — not a telecommunications tower job.

A day in the life

You’ll start your morning reviewing work orders, loading coatings and tools, and heading to a customer site. After a safety check, you’ll verify basin levels and water quality, inspect fans, motors, gearboxes, and pumps, clean heat exchangers and tube bundles, and apply industrial coatings to protect assets from corrosion. You’ll troubleshoot issues, document everything clearly, and collaborate with teammates to deliver a smooth handoff or closeout — all while following strict PPE and fall-protection protocols.

What you’ll tackle

  • Inspect cooling towers for proper water levels, water chemistry, and overall unit health.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on fans, motors, pumps, gearboxes, and associated components.
  • Clean and maintain heat exchangers, tube bundles, and related system parts.
  • Apply industrial coatings and complete structural repairs to extend life and prevent corrosion.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance issues quickly and effectively.
  • Record inspections, maintenance activities, and service notes with accuracy.
  • Coordinate with fellow technicians and project teams to keep work flowing.
  • Follow safety procedures rigorously, including PPE, fall protection, and working-at-heights standards.

What you bring

  • 1–3 years in HVAC, mechanical service, or industrial maintenance preferred; cooling tower knowledge is a plus.
  • Skill with common hand and power tools and a commitment to safe use.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting instincts.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Clear communicator who can work independently and as part of a crew.

Where and how you work

  • Field-based role with regular travel to customer facilities.
  • Outdoor work in all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Generally Monday–Friday business hours; overtime or weekend work as needed.

Physical demands

  • Lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Climb ladders, work at height, and enter confined spaces safely.
  • Wear required PPE (respirator, fall protection, gloves, safety glasses, etc.).
  • Stand, kneel, and crouch for extended periods to complete maintenance tasks.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Drug and alcohol screening.
  • DOT physical, respirator physical, and fit test.
  • Background check.
  • Driver’s abstract review.

Compensation

This is an hourly, non-exempt role with competitive pay based on experience and qualifications. Starting at $25/hr… Johnson Barrow also offers a comprehensive benefits package and reimburses business-related travel expenses in accordance with company policy.

Beyond the paycheck: total rewards

  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • HSA and FSA options to fit your financial approach.
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid vacation, sick time, and holidays.
  • Employee assistance program (EAP).
  • Ongoing training and professional development.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Volunteer time and wellness initiatives.
