Coordinator and Instructor, Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting

Description Summary

To teach dental hygiene and dental assisting courses in a face-to-face and/or virtual environment. This environment will include effective assessment of student learning with course design that connects students to content, each other, and the world.

Examples of Duties

  • The faculty member will share a dual role in the Dental Hygiene and the Dental Assisting program.
  • The faculty member develops and/or updates courses and course guides as assigned by the Department Chair.
  • The faculty member annually engages in professional development activities and seeks information concerning developing trends and ideas relating to teaching.
  • The faculty member develops and utilizes teaching components based upon current research.
  • The faculty member prepares, distributes, and submits first day handouts for all sections assigned to the faculty members in accordance with Department and College policies.
  • The faculty member demonstrates current knowledge of the subject matter being taught by presentations, activities, questions, and responses relevant to the course syllabus.
  • The faculty member uses a variety of materials and resources which enhance the teaching of the course objectives.
  • The faculty member consistently displays evidence of organization and planning, including materials being available and the instructional sequence progressing logically.
  • The faculty member communicates consistently with students and staff using means established by the College, including e-mail and voice mail.
  • The faculty member uses class time to encourage student alternatives and active involvement in the learning process.
  • The faculty member makes use of a variety of teaching strategies and technologies appropriate for the courses taught.
  • The faculty member communicates with students in a positive, impartial manner.
  • The faculty member meets scheduled classes in accordance with College policy, beginning and ending class sessions per published schedules.
  • The faculty member maintains scheduled office hours to insure accessibility to students and colleagues.
  • The faculty member assesses the overall student learning in the class by using multiple classroom techniques, documents the assessment, and uses the assessment data for instructional improvement.
  • The faculty member monitors and provides frequent and specific feedback to students regarding the attainment of the learning outcomes and their progress in the course.
  • The faculty member maintains adequate and accurate records on class attendance and student grades. These records are submitted by the faculty member according to College policy and established deadlines.
  • The faculty member encourages regular attendance and retention of students, including personally contacting students following absences to help and concern for their welfare.
  • The faculty member treats all students with respect and tailor’s instruction to meet their academic needs.
  • The faculty member maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • The faculty member is professional in interacting with students, staff, and members of the communities served by the College.
  • The faculty member exercises good judgment in dealing with classroom problems and assumes responsibility for those actions.
  • The faculty member participates in student recruitment.
  • The faculty member contributes to the achievement of department mission goals/objectives, and responsibilities.
  • The faculty member attends meetings as required by the College.
  • The faculty member participates in professional activities that enhance interaction with adjunct instructors.
  • The faculty member demonstrates a determined effort to maintain a good working relationship with all other employees of the College.
  • The faculty member demonstrates good rapport with patrons and community members. Good public relations are evident.
  • The faculty member exercises stewardship of College facilities, equipment, and materials, including properly using College facilities, equipment, and materials, reporting needed repairs, and supervising students regarding use of facilities and equipment.
  • The faculty member requests in written form instructional equipment and supplies for classroom/laboratory use.
  • The faculty member supports College sponsored activities and events.
  • The faculty member openly supports and promotes the vision/mission of the College and works to achieve the vision/mission of the College.

Qualifications

An Iowa licensed dental hygienist who is a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and possesses a master’s or higher degree who has background in education or be willing to obtain degree within 18 months, and the professional experience necessary to understand and fulfill the program goals.

OR

A licensed dentist who has background in education and the professional experience necessary to understand and fulfill the program goals.

A Dental Hygienist appointed as coordinator, must have “Certified Dental Assistant” credentials with occupational experiences with four handed dentistry, or be willing to acquire within the first 6 months of employment.

Administrative experience, instructional experience, and professional experience in clinical practice either as a dental hygienist or working with a dental hygienist is preferred.

Must possess good communication and organizational skills, be detailed oriented, and work as a team member.

Meet the standards of the Iowa Central Quality Faculty Plan established by the College Board of Trustees.

Must pass background check.

GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH OR WITHOUT A REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves standing most of the time.

Constant (67-100%): Reaching, standing. walking, lifting, dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, and seeing.

Frequent (34-66%): Stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying (up t 30 pounds), viewing computer screens, perceiving attributes of patients such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly the fingertips.

Occasionally (10-33%): Traveling to other on-campus facilities, off-campus facilities or agencies; trundling equipment(s). May potentially be subject to biohazard waste or chemicals, moveable mechanical parts, sharp instruments, fumes, odors, dust, and mists. May potentially be subject to distressed students.

Persons in this position must satisfactorily complete a blood-borne pathogen and hazardous chemical program and be certified in Basis Life Support. He/She must also comply with the Iowa Administrative Code Rules [59.12(3)] which requires a health exam upon employment, hepatitis immunization or decline, and yearly tuberculin testing.
