Corporate HSE Director

Summary/Objective
The Corporate HSE Director is a visionary leader responsible for fostering a proactive, best-in-class safety culture across Superior Construction. This role drives the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive HSE policies, hands-on training programs, and field support to minimize incidents, ensure regulatory compliance, and align with our core value of Safety, ultimately creating a safer workplace where employees thrive.
We seek a proactive, hands-on leader with a passion for transforming safety culture in highway, road and bridge construction and industrial work. The ideal Corporate HSE Director is a proactive problem-solver, demonstrating urgency and commitment to achieving zero-incident goals. They are a visible, approachable mentor who spends significant time in the field, coaching regional teams and fostering trust. With deep expertise in highway and bridge construction safety, they proactively develop and deliver training, particularly for workers’ compensation and auto safety risk reduction. They drive measurable safety improvements, targeting reducing Superior’s Experience Modification Rate (EMR), Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR), Days Away Restricted or Transferred (DART), and Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) to achieve industry-leading performance. They drive innovative solutions, take ownership of all safety initiatives, leverage data to reduce risks, and align HSE strategies with Superior Construction’s family-oriented values and mission to deliver safe, high-quality projects
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Champion a company-wide safety culture by integrating safety into daily operations, leading by example through visible field presence (30-40% of time on-site), and recognizing employee contributions to safety goals.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership, including Business Unit Presidents, to align safety priorities with organizational objectives, attending quarterly Executive HSE meetings to review risks and opportunities.
  • Work closely with the risk management department to manage workers’ compensation events, develop specific training and mentoring programs to lower claim incidents, and leverage telematics data to enhance the auto safety program, aiming to significantly reduce auto accidents and losses.
  • Partner with the communications team to develop effective communication strategies and crisis management plans for critical situations, ensuring coordinated and timely responses.
  • Provide direct support and mentorship to regional HSE managers, fostering accountability and empowering teams to uphold safety standards.
  • Actively engage in safety organizations and industry groups
Policy & Program Development
  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety policies aligned with OSHA guidelines and industry best practices, tailored to highway road and bridge construction and industrial work, to achieve best-in-class safety performance.
  • Implement programs to specifically lower Superior’s EMR and TRIR to achieve industry-leading performance.
  • Assess project-specific risks on Superior Construction sites and adapt policies to mitigate identified hazards.
  • Operate and enhance safety software programs to streamline compliance and track performance metrics, including auto telematics data for fleet safety.
  • Lead the development and execution of the corporate annual strategic HSE plan
Training & Education
  • Design and lead proactive, hands-on training programs, including field-based workshops and simulations, to ensure widespread adoption of safety policies across all employee levels.
  • Proactively develop and deliver targeted training to address identified gaps, particularly for auto safety (e.g., defensive driving, telematics compliance) and workers’ compensation prevention (e.g., ergonomic practices, hazard awareness).
  • Update and deliver HSE orientation programs, including videos, to ensure new hires understand their safety responsibilities in road and bridge construction and industrial work.
Incident Management
  • Oversee regulatory reporting of safety, environmental incidents and workers’ compensation events, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
  • Investigate incidents to determine root causes, implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence, and communicate findings to executives with actionable recommendations.
  • Analyze safety data, incident reports, and telematics data to support data-driven decisions and reduce auto accidents and workers’ compensation claims.
Audits & Continuous Improvement
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify hazards, ensure compliance, and reinforce workplace safety standards specific to road and bridge construction.
  • Lead the development and execution of the annual corporate strategic HSE plan, setting measurable goals
  • Assist with yearly HSE budget reviews and lead insurance risk assessments during site visits, collaborating with internal risk management and legal teams on insurance renewals.

Supervisory Requirements
Directly supervises regional HSE managers and teams, responsible for performance management, professional development, and fostering a high-accountability environment.
Work Environment
This role operates in both office settings and dynamic construction sites, requiring significant time on-site to provide hands-on oversight and ensure policy implementation on highway road and bridge projects and industrial sites.
Physical Demands
Requires occasional walking and standing for long periods on construction sites, with good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination to navigate job sites safely.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full-time, exempt position. May require long hours and occasional weekend and night work to meet project demands or respond to incidents.
Travel
Up to 50% travel to Southeast and Midwest business units and project sites to provide field support and conduct audits.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, environmental health & safety, safety management, construction, or a related field.
  • Professional certification (e.g., CSP, CHST, ARM) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • 10+ years of HSE experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role driving cultural change in the construction industry, preferably in highway road and bridge construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA guidelines, auto safety programs, and workers’ compensation risk management.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Proven track record of reducing incident rates by at least 10% through proactive programs, including auto safety and workers’ compensation initiatives, in road and bridge construction and industrial maintenance.
  • Experience managing auto telematics programs to reduce accidents and losses.
  • Experience fostering safety cultures in multi-site construction operations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with strong collaboration with risk management and communications teams.
  • Strong mentoring and coaching abilities to develop HSE teams through targeted training.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and HSE software (e.g., iAuditor, Procore), including telematics platforms.
Additional Eligibility Requirements
  • Valid state driver’s license required prior to employment.
  • Willingness to undergo background checks and drug screening.
