Traffic Inspector (Construction Project)

Location: On-site (Full-Time, Long-Term Assignment on a Port Authority project)

Position Overview

The Traffic Inspector will be responsible for monitoring, inspecting, and documenting all Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) operations and traffic control activities on a large, active construction project. The inspector will ensure compliance with approved traffic plans, agency standards, and safety regulations to maintain the safe and efficient flow of vehicles, pedestrians, and construction equipment through and around the work zone.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret approved traffic control and staging plans, including detour layouts, signage, lane closures, and pedestrian routing.
  • Inspect and verify the proper implementation of Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) setups in the field.
  • Monitor traffic flow and patterns to ensure minimal disruption to the public and emergency access.
  • Conduct daily field inspections of contractor traffic operations, flagging setups, and temporary control devices.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports documenting field conditions, contractor compliance, and any incidents or deviations.
  • Coordinate with the Resident Engineer, contractor, and public agencies regarding lane closures, detours, and temporary traffic changes.
  • Verify that all traffic devices (signs, barriers, cones, lighting, etc.) meet applicable specifications and are properly maintained.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or violations related to traffic management.
  • Participate in progress meetings and assist in developing corrective action plans for non-conforming traffic setups.
  • Review and provide input on traffic flow reports and contractor submittals related to MPT.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a Traffic or Construction Inspector on roadway, bridge, or infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret traffic control and construction drawings.
  • Familiarity with MPT standards and regulations (NYCDOT, NYSDOT, MUTCD, etc.).
  • Strong communication and field documentation skills.
  • Proficient in daily report preparation and coordination with multiple stakeholders.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Job Type: Full-time

Base Pay: $50,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
