Counsel, Insured Legal Services

About the Role

Healthcare Services Group is seeking a Counsel, Insured Legal Services to support our insured healthcare providers with regulatory and pre-suit legal matters. This role focuses heavily on HIPAA compliance, medical records requests, and subpoena management, with the opportunity to expand into broader healthcare regulatory work over time.

This position works closely with the Claims team and communicates directly with healthcare providers, attorneys, and court personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently manage and respond to medical records requests, subpoenas, and court-related documentation involving PHI
  • Analyze subpoenas to determine validity, scope, objections, and compliance requirements
  • Ensure all communications and responses comply with HIPAA and applicable state privacy laws
  • Serve as the primary internal resource for HIPAA-related matters within the Claims team
  • Communicate directly with opposing counsel, insured providers, and court personnel
  • Maintain accurate documentation of requests, deadlines, objections, and compliance decisions
  • Coordinate with providers, vendors, and legal counsel to obtain and transmit records appropriately
  • Identify issues requiring escalation and coordinate with outside counsel or leadership
  • Apply structured workflows and decision-making frameworks to ensure consistency and compliance
  • Support handling of Board of Healing Arts (BOHA) and Board of Nursing (BON) matters (non-litigation)
  • Assist with claims intake, documentation, and internal process improvements
  • Participate in training, audits, and initiatives related to HIPAA and regulatory compliance

Qualifications

Required:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and current license to practice in Missouri
  • Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Sound judgment and ability to follow structured workflows

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare law, regulatory compliance, litigation, or insurance claims
  • Experience with HIPAA, medical records handling, subpoenas, and healthcare litigation
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders including providers, attorneys, and internal teams
