The Court Bailiff assists judges, court security officers, witnesses, and civilians in the court room and adjacent waiting area. This position maintains order in the courtroom, assists with maintaining security, and provides information. This position coordinates juries and fulfills judicial requirements, prepares
various forms, and maintains records on defendants and court activities.

There is flexibility with the days worked each week, and flexibility with start and end times. This is a temporary position, not to exceed 67 days per year. There are no benefits provided with this position.

Essential Functions

This job description indicates the normal type and level of work expected of the incumbent. Incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
1. Registers jurors and ensures that they complete required paperwork; plays instructional video, and answers jurors’ questions or relays their questions to the Court Administrator or Judge as appropriate. Confiscates cell phones, cameras, recording devices, etc., and ensures jurors do not have any unauthorized communication.
2. Provides assistance to members of the public scheduled for court appearances. Directs members of the public to specific waiting areas and provides general information; provides assistance to defendants, jurors, witnesses, and other visitors with disabilities who may need assistance.
3. Coordinates with court administration and staff to ensure court procedures run smoothly; remains alert and ready at all times to control unusual or unexpected situations in the courtroom, and relays any unusual circumstances or information to judge, court clerk, or Transport-Court Security Deputies for evaluation and action. Informs Transport-Court Security Deputies if cameras and other recording devices enter the courtroom.
4. Assists in maintaining security in and around the courtroom to prevent unauthorized individuals entrance to closed court proceedings and juvenile court. Takes precautions for witness security. Assists armed court security officer to provide security measures for multi-defendant or high-risk
trials. Assists law enforcement officers and Correctional Officers in their duties as directed by superiors.
5. Coordinates the activities of juries. Explains procedures and provides instructions to jurors; sequesters juries when directed. Accompanies jury members, staying with them around the clock when necessary. Assists the Transport/Court Security Sergeant, or their designee, in making
arrangements with hotels to remove access to media and phones when sequestered. Arranges for jurors’ meals and other personal needs, makes phone calls and assists with making family arrangements for them. Ensures applicable rules of the court are followed.
6. Carries out lawful orders and directions of the court.
7. Performs and assists with a variety of department functions and activities such as submitting all required reports and forms; assisting with moving and arranging tables and chairs; attending department meetings and various training sessions as directed; providing assistance to trainees as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Class D Driver’s License.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history background check.
  • Law enforcement or court system experience preferred.
