VA ABC Authority is seeking a qualified candidate for a Court Reporter/ Legal Assistant position in our Hearings and Appeals Division. The selected candidate will be a Certified Court Reporter (CCR) through the Virginia Court Reporters Association or through the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA) and will provide high-level administrative support within the Hearings and Appeals Division. The selected candidate will be responsible for stenographically recording administrative hearing proceedings, coordinating the production of documents, providing administrative and clerical assistance such as proofreading, word processing, managing files/records. Since statewide travel is required, the selected candidate must be available to travel when necessary.
Areas of Responsibility
- Stenographically recording administrative hearings at a minimum speed of 225 words per minute using either a writer or voice-writer.
- Assist with keying, compiling, copying, proofreading, mailing legal documents to licensees, attorneys, applicants, objectors, and Authority staff.
- Update and maintain Excel spreadsheets for case monitoring and reporting.
- Proofread documents prepared by Administrative Law Judges and other office personnel to ensure substantive accuracy as well as correct grammar and spelling.
- Serves as the customer service liaison among licensees, ABC agents or other Authority staff, and attorneys regarding administrative hearings and appeals that are docketed through the Hearings & Appeals division.
- Reserve hearing rooms and arranges alternative meeting sites.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of a NCRA or NVRA-accredited program with the ability to maintain speeds of 225 words per minute.
- Minimum of three (3) years previous court reporting experience in a judicial or quasi-judicial environment.
- Valid Virginia Drivers License is required.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills, organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work well individually as well as in a team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Maintain highest level of confidentiality.
- Ability to be both proactive and flexible.
- Advance computer and Microsoft Office skills (i.e. Excel and Word) and use of other applications necessary for the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates or Bachelor's degree and a graduate of an NCRA accredited program with a minimum of three (3) years previous court reporting experience in a judicial or quasi-judicial environment.
Virginia ABC employees are covered under the Commonwealth’s benefits package and VRS. However, Authority employees are exempt from the Virginia Personnel Act and the Virginia Public Procurement Act.
