Senior CPA or Enrolled Agent (Tax & Advisory Focus)

Phoenix Accounting is a growing, multi-state accounting and advisory firm serving established business owners nationwide. We provide both compliance and advisory-level services and operate at a high professional standard.

We are seeking an experienced CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) to join our team in a senior-level role supporting tax, resolution, payroll correction, and broader accounting advisory matters.

This position begins at 10–15 hours per week with strong potential to expand into a larger role based on performance and firm growth.

This is NOT a seasonal tax preparation position.
If you are seeking tax-season-only work, this role will not be a fit. We are looking for a long-term professional who wants to grow within a structured, year-round firm environment.

A paid evaluation period will be required to ensure mutual alignment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation and review of individual and business tax returns
  • Multi-state tax filings
  • Tax planning support
  • Handling tax resolution cases (IRS notices, payment plans, compliance matters)
  • Payroll correction cases and payroll tax compliance issues
  • Identifying and resolving general accounting discrepancies
  • Reviewing and advising on client bookkeeping and financial statements
  • General ledger oversight and balance sheet reconciliation
  • Accounts payable and accounts receivable oversight as needed
  • Supporting higher-level accounting and advisory matters beyond tax compliance
  • Participating in client consultations when appropriate

This role requires comfort operating beyond tax season and engaging in broader accounting problem-solving and advisory work.

Required Qualifications

  • Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation
  • 5–10+ years of professional tax and accounting experience
  • Strong experience in:
  • Tax preparation and compliance
  • Tax resolution
  • Payroll corrections and compliance matters
  • Financial statement review and bookkeeping oversight
  • Experience with S-Corporations, Partnerships, and complex individual returns
  • Strong understanding of debits & credits and double-entry bookkeeping
  • Ability to analyze and correct bookkeeping discrepancies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a structured remote environment

Advanced Qualifications & Expertise (Preferred)

  • Experience in estate planning, trusts, nonprofit accounting, or regulatory compliance
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and technical accounting standards
  • Proficiency in accounting software platforms including:
  • QuickBooks Online
  • QuickBooks Desktop
  • Ultimate Tax
  • TaxDome
  • Xero
  • Sage
  • Ambrook
  • Other cloud-based accounting systems

Adaptability to client platform transitions is essential.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial reports
  • Experience preparing and presenting financial reports to business owners

Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
